2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport shows new face in America

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport shows its big, new face in America
Plus, an update on where the Japanese brand is heading

he 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport initially showed us its new sheetmetal at the Geneva Motor Show, but we got a chance to check out the vehicle in the flesh at the company's research and development center in Ann Arbor, Mich., today. Nearly everything we learned about the Outlander Sport (known as the ASX in other markets) before applies to the North American version of the vehicle.

However, one aspect we were uncertain of was the continued presence of the manual transmission. We asked, and Mitsubishi is officially dropping the stick shift version of the Outlander Sport with this update. It was previously only available on the base trim level, exclusively paired with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Mitsubishi was one of the last holdouts to offer a manual transmission option in the small crossover market, and now they're officially out. Three-pedal versions of the Outlander Sport represented just 2% of total model sales, so the business case just wasn't there anymore.

We confirmed that the powertrains from the 2019 model year car will carry over to the 2020 Outlander Sport, which means you'll have the choice between the 148 horsepower 2.0-liter or the 168 horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder. Both engines are paired to a CVT. Of course, all-wheel drive will also continue to be available optionally.

Looks like an improvement over the current iteration, which wasn't hard on the eyes anyway (though it was getting a bit long in the tooth). The updated version should do well with most until the Nissan-Mitsu alliance produces an all-new replacement.

Too bad they didn't do much to spruce up the interior.

Yes, the interior looks like a modernized version of a 1990's interior.

That looks pretty good actually, and I quite like how they've done that infotainment screen not looking like an afterthought.

Mitsubishi teamed up with one of the local "yelling radio commercial" places. In less than a year, they are the number one selling dealership in America. I laugh at their make $350 a week and get a $30,000 loan promotions.

Mitsubishi peaked in high school. Now it's 35 working as a server at an Applebees in its home town.

There's a market for cheap new CUVs with long warranties.
My Mitsus were always dead reliable. The problem with them is the car falls apart around the powertrain.

CVT paired with a 168 hp for that vehicle seems way under-powered.

Are you in south Florida? I've been hearing those commercials quite a bit.

Looks better than the Equinox but.. meh.

I don't see a lot of Mitsus around. I always figured they would follow Suzuki out of the market some day.

They should but MHI is so diverse in other products, the car business is peanuts compared to others.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, includes these industrial companies:

Mitsubishi Motors, the sixth-largest Japan-based car manufacturer.
Mitsubishi Chemical, the largest Japan-based chemicals company
Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, a power generation division
Nikon Corporation, specializing in optics and imaging.

    Even Nuclear power!

I agree that their prime has long passed and time hasn't been good to them since the 80's and 90's.

Re: 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport shows new face in America

The decline of Mitsubishi is pretty sad. They used to have lots of cool stuff. Hell, I even bought a new Eclipse turbo in 1996. Nice looking car, and it felt like a rocket once the turbo spooled up around 2,800 RPM. Too bad it was a POS. Looked just like this:

Now the Eclipse is... a crossover.
