    2020 Mercedes Benz GLS

    NY LIVE: 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS

Billed as the S-Class of SUVs, the 2020 GLS boasts several improvements over its predecessor. The most obvious is size -- the GLS is a couple inches longer than the previous model, thanks in large to a wheelbase that has grown by 2.4-inches.

Mercedes turned that extra length into more cabin space. Mercedes says second-row legroom in the GLS is up by as much as 3.4-inches, while the SUV's third row has been made large enough to comfortably accommodate two adults over six-feet tall. All three rows in the new GLS are electronically adjustable.

The GLS will initially be offered in two different trims -- the entry-level GLS 450 and the range-topping GLS 580. Both models will come standard with Mercedes' 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, a nine-speed automatic transmission and a 48-volt mild hybrid system.

The 450 model is powered by an inline-six gas engine that develops 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque on its own. The mild hybrid system adds another 21 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque over short periods.

The 580 gets a gas V8 rated at 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. Again, the mild hybrid can provide an extra 21 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque when needed.

Included in the GLS' standard all-wheel drive system is an electronically controlled transfer case that can send up to 100 percent of the engine's power to a single axle. The GLS 580 can be further outfitted with an upgraded transfer case that includes a multi-plate clutch and a reduction gear for off-road driving.

In order to further improve the GLS' off-road prowess -- along with its on-road comfort -- all models are fitted as standard with Mercedes' AIRMATIC air suspension system with Adaptive Damping Plus.

An E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL system is also available as an optional upgrade. Operating on a 48-volt system, E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL can control the damping and spring forces on each individual wheel. The system also has a CURVE function that, like a motorcycle, leans the GLS into turns to help improve cornering. A ROAD SURFACE SCAN is also bundled into the package and can ready the suspension for any road imperfections detected ahead.

We knew this was coming. Adding in the X7, this market is getting very competitive. Escalade better bring it.

Overall I like it, don't love it. This was supposed to put the GLS interior on par with the S-Klass, but I feel it's half step. Of course the higher trim levels should be nicer than whats in the pics plus whatever Designo has cooking, and the Maybach version on top of that. Plus the AMG models and they should have something for just about everyone. I must say, owning a GL450, I really do like their air suspension, glad they kept it.

Seems like Mercedes and BMW each pump out another SUV every 2 months. Incredible.

Gah, I despise the fake grille look that's rampant these days. At least they didn't do the so commonly used hexagon, although the expanded metal look isn't any better. Especially on the blue one. Not a bad looking vehicle otherwise, though rather anonymous.

I had the opportunity to get a ride in the X7 yesterday at the BMW Autocross I attended. Quite a spectacular vehicle, though smaller than I expected. The third row doesn't seem like a place an adult would want to be for any length of time. But a lot of nice touches and actual climbing and descent capabilities (they had a small test ground). It also had "auto reverse" where it can back up (example was a long, windy driveway that you have to back out of because you can't turn around), all you have to do is press a button and it will back itself out of the driveway. They demonstrated it and it works.

Also drove the M8 - awesome!

And did the actual autocross with the new 330i - great car! Though the steering wasn't as nice as my ATS.

The active body control sounds pretty damn awesome.

That dash is just one big computer screen. Interesting to see. The legs with the dong in the center console is very odd.

Now that you mention it...it kinda looks like 2 legs up in stirrups with a head poking out from inbetween.

It's okay. Volvo still looks better inside and out.

What's the space to the right of the large LCD? Is that a vent?

I was thinking the same thing....It must have been inspired by one of the interior designers spouses giving birth.
