    2016 Lexus GS Debuts

2016 Lexus GS: The GS Joins the Booster Club
A freshening brings a facelift and a new turbocharged base model.

    August 14, 2015
    By: Don Sherman

With no hint of Eastern inscrutability, Toyota boss Akio Toyoda defined the Lexus GS mid-luxe rear-drive model’s mission ages ago: Attack the European sports sedan squadron—Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, and soon Alfa Romeo—with determination. Given that task, Lexus has broadened the GS roster by adding a value edition powered by a smaller, more fuel-efficient engine. The new-for-2016 GS200t follows Continental protocol to the letter with a turbocharged and intercooled 2.0-liter inline-four delivering a potent 241 horsepower at 5800 rpm and a persuasive 258 lb-ft of torque.

I like the styling updates, which help the GS fall in line with some of the more recent, more exotic Lexus designs. Plus the interior revisions look nice as well. The GS200t might be a nice sales booster for Lexus as it lowers (at least I'd expect it to) the price of entry and will allow for more aggressive lease advertisements if Lexus so chooses. I've called for a sub-GS350 and it's nice to see that happen. The GS350 gains more power which is nice, although as with the CTS 3.6 and Q70 3.7 competitors, won't have the torque of the FI 6-cylinder 535i or A6 3.0 TFSI. If the GS F is priced appropriately (72K-ish IMO), it might serve nicely as a V-8 and performance option a la S6. Overall it's a decent update to the line and should keep the GS relatively relevant for a few more years.

It's a nice car, I've always been a fan of the GS.

GS interior is just fantastic... love the horizontal layout.

    Exterior though? Horrific.

    Re: 2016 Lexus GS Debuts

Unless I'm missing it, the GS350 seems to still be the only GS to offer AWD. Why won't Lexus pair the 2.0T with AWD for either the IS or now the GS? Those are lost sales right there.

Take away the entire front bulge and you have a nice looking car.
    With it? Vomit inducing

More uglification of America's roads! I'll be so happy when Lexus adopts a new design language!

Considerably more. The ES is a phenomenal seller for the brand, and after all the ES has similar space and features to the GS for a lower price. Obviously the GS does offer more and is more of a sport sedan (plus AWD), but the ES is a value in comparison. And I've driven the current and previous gen ES. Very smooth and refined. Every bit as polished as much more expensive midsize sedans and still nice on the inside (but it's no A6 or CTS). Enthusiasts won't like it, but for what it is I can see why so many people buy the ES. The GS has not been such a good seller for Lexus with this generation or some of the last gen AFAIK, but I think I've read before that Lexus is adamant the ES and GS buyer are quite different.

Looks a lot like the Infinity that was on here a bit ago. I think I prefer the new Malibu and that thing is monstrously gross.
