Wrong on GM -- and its drive for fuel efficiency

Not sure if this has been posted already, I couldn't find it. This is in response to an article that was posted I think last week. I am glad that people inside GM are coming to the defense of the company. We need more of this, along with more commercials that stress MPG, quality, and safety features. http://www.freep.com/voices/letters/...e_20050624.htm

Exactly, I'm hearing all this buzz on Toyota's new and "wonderful" pick-up and SUV lineup, but wait, oh wow, they are bad for the environment, and right the prius doesn't get the numbers that were suggested, why, cuz unless you have mild hybrids like the accord, or silverado hybrids, you have to floor it

Toyota is very media savvy. GM is not. Toyota takes out ads in media industry publications, read by journalists, editors and other elites, and they tout not the cars, but tout the company as socially responsible. No one in the elite media views GM as an enviromental leader, no one thinks they are a socially responsible company. The next time the New York Times and NPR run a story on GM, they'll GUARANTEED mention gas guzzling SUVs, Hummers, etc. That's the image the media has built with a lot of help from GM. When people think of the most fuel efficent cars, what does GM give them to think of? A 40-50 mpg car? A cutting edge hybrid? No, a run of the mill 4cyl Malibu that is hardly cutting edge. Not a bad car, but nothing someone from the Washington Post or LA Times is going to write a story about. But they will write a story about a much more interesting a fuel efficent and trendy car, the Prius.
