"Oh yeah. They're all like that."

That's how a Toyota spokesman responded when I pointed out loose, poorly fitted pieces in the company's high-profile, high-tech and high-priced Highlander gas-electric hybrid SUV.

All in all, while the Highlander hybrid does offer good performance and some fuel savings, those benefits are not great enough to outpace competitive SUVs like the TrailBlazer, Nissan Pathfinder and the Ford Escape hybrid or overcome the fit and finish defects in the one I tested.

I think Toyota is so desperate at becoming not just the #1 automaker in the world, but pushing their leadership in hybrids, that their cutting quality corners.

First the new Avalon (radio buttons falling off), now the Highlander Hybrid. I truly think Toyota passed its peak and now that it is trying SO hard to be the #1 automaker, they are getting lazy and complacent with keeping cars at top quality. The amount of Toyota criticism is increasing...the free media ride of the past is over. If they don't watch it, their image could take a serious blow.

I think plane was being sarcastic.

I do believe Hell just froze over!

Seriously, I don't believe Toyota is cutting corners or being lazy. I believe we are seeing the effects of a couple of things.

    1. They are growing too fast.
    2. Toyota did not anticipate the success of their hybrid and are now rushing more vehicles to market to capitalize on their lead.
    3. Toyota's vision of itself is becoming distorted. If you keep getting told you can do no wrong, eventually you come to believe it.

We'll have to see if this trend continues but in any case this has been a good week to be a GM fan.

It's truly refreshing to see a media outlet slam Toyota for once. Although, it would mean a lot more if Consumers Reports said it.

all are very good reasons but i think your #2 is the best and most realistic reason.

You guys are just making a big deal about this. Just a few occasions is fine, everyone one makes mistakes. GM sure made a lot more, and I don't see you guys talking bad abot that then you do for Toyota.

ya, i agreel i hate how this is a GM board and everyone always slams the imports. Sadly when it comes to the topic of imports vs domestics, people keep saying GM is better then toyota or ford or dcx is better then toyota/honda. my question to you is why? why is GM better then toyota? quality? efficiency? prestige? refinement? resale value?

this is just a question not to make a point, i really want to know why GM fans here think GM is better. it may change me!

Well it is technically a GM site so you will come across people who hate the competition, and love GM which is fine (excluding hating a company because they are a good competitor). I was in a Highlander hybrid today, and I was impressed with the interior materials, and how everything fit perfectly. Bad apples happen to everyone so there isn't a point in saying "Toyota sucks" "Their quality is in the toilet" "Bland=Toyota".
