Toyota introduces global market Fortuner SUV
Toyota has introduced the new Fortuner, a seven-seater SUV designed largely for Australia and Thailand.
The Fortuner features the same rugged body-on-frame construction as the new Hilux pickup that was unveiled last spring. It stretches 188 inches long, 72 inches wide and 72 inches tall, dimensions that make it slightly shorter and narrower than a 4Runner, and it can tackle the Australian outback with ease thanks to off-road tires and over eight-inches of ground clearance.
Inside, it offers space for up to seven passengers in a 2+3+2 configuration. Photos of the interior are not available, but it's safe to assume the SUV shares at least a handful of components with the Hilux on which it is based.
Power for the Fortuner comes from a 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine that makes 174 horsepower at 3,400 rpm and up to 331 lb-ft. of torque from 1,600 to 2,400 rpm. A six-speed manual transmission sends power to all four wheels via a part-time four-wheel drive system, and a six-speed automatic is available at an extra cost.
