Tada: How Toyota and Subaru created the GT86
    Toyota Blog
    February 11th, 2013 admin

Since its launch last summer, the Toyota GT86 has received multiple awards for its no-nonsense, fun-to-drive philosophy.

But without unprecedented collaboration between two Japanese carmakers and major backing from on high within Toyota, it might never have happened.

Andrew English recently spoke with GT86 chief engineer Tetsuya Tada, who explained the complicated behind-the-scenes story that led to the most acclaimed sports car of the past decade.

In the end, this is a story of how the development of this remarkable car overcame obstacles and forged a grudging and mutual respect between two teams of engineers, both of whom were working for very different companies.

Here’s Tada-san’s story, in his own words.

“You need to remember that this car was the result of an executive board meeting at Toyota in 2007 with the sole agenda that people around the world are losing interest in cars and what Toyota was going to do about it. One suggestion on how to address this was to go back to basics with a sports car that would rekindle interest. In the past, sports cars had been repeatedly rejected as having a poor return on investment, but at this meeting it was decided that if the technology division could make something that could restart interest, then the marketing division would support it.

“I had been working in the minivan department engineering new product, but a month after the meeting I was summoned. ‘Forget about minivans,’ they said, ‘you are now working on the sports-car project.’

Sounds like a GM PR story. "We had to overcome tremendous internal road blocks to make a car that we used to make without question 20 years ago."

Not at all. The car does get a lot of hype, but it deserves it. The FT86000 GT-Z (my pet name for it) is a great car. It's Toyota's Alpha, a car that theoretically should have been made years ago, but for whatever reasons internally, it never happened.
    Both cars deserve the respect.

I wish they didn't make that car, even the Subaru version.
I hope it's a short lived vehicle along w/the Subaru twin.
I also hope that Subaru cuts all ties w/Toyota.
As far as I'm concerned, it's a POJ, like ALL Toyotas', Lexus & Scions are.

    !!!
IF It's A Chevrolet & RWD, Don't ride in it!!!

ALL Chevy's NEED to be FWD/F-AWD!!!

    If it's a Toyota/Lexus/Scion, Don't ride in/drive it!!

I just hope that a few people in GM will read this, get off their butts, and make a final decision on the 130r.

I have heard nothing but positive things as well about these twins. I personally haven't driven one of them yet but I would love to try one out. My only gripe would be the interior but I know these aren't really designed for creature comforts they are all about weight saving and focused on no distractions.

Love the car, absolutely hate the Scion badging, it totally makes me lose interest in the car.

Re: Tada: How Toyota and Subaru created the GT86

I'd love to see a version with another 100 horsepower. I'm not really into sports cars, yet such a car would make me think twice about my preferences.

More collaboration like this between Subaru and Toyota might work in Subaru's favor if they receive more attention on infotainment, etc. I hope they stick to their platforms and engine family, though.

This car is in many ways an example of how marketing can often sully a cars inherent appeal. This car may very well go on record as being the most over hyped car of the last 5 years as MCGarret said previously.
I want a car so violent that the mere thought of full throttle would cause a heart attack. That actually going wide open throttle in would result in nothing less than instant death!

90% of the hype out there was from the internet itself that worships the AE86 because of a comic and cartoon about some kid who uses it as a tofu delivery car while drifting around Japanese mountains. For serious.

Dude, I have been watching the Initial D stuff, and it's GREAT! It really is. I'm just about to finish season 1.

Re: Tada: How Toyota and Subaru created the GT86

I'm actually one of the people who supported the Scion decision, rather than Toyota, for the Toyota version. Scion needs a breath of life in their lineup and IMO should become a sportier brand, not just a "youthful" brand, however automakers seem to be defining them (they want cheap funky hatches?). And for those that take issue with the badging (considering you take it to most Toyota dealers anyway), there's the Subie version.
