Subaru to build three-row crossover in Indiana

Subaru has confirmed plans to build a new three-row crossover model at its Lafayette, Indiana, factory.

The mystery model promises to be larger than its predecessor, the retired Tribeca, and outfitted with a "full third-row capability" that presumably offers seating for seven occupants.

A name has not been finalized, however Subaru vows to keep an "outdoor adventure" theme consistent with its siblings -- the Outback, Forester and Crosstrek.

The company has already revealed a seven-seater concept for the Japanese market, simply called the Crossover 7 (pictured), that first appeared in 2013. Its design takes a more Outback-like approach than the Tribeca, with a spacious interior that can be easily converted from seating to stowage.

Separate unconfirmed reports suggest the design direction for a US production model has been surrounded by controversy. The company is said to be focusing on a more conservative look than the Tribeca, but leaders are said to have disagreed over wether to draw inspiration from the Forester or Outback.

Rather surprising that they haven't done this yet. I will say that the Tribeca (original "B9" design) has grown on me, not that it matters.

I suppose it'd be easy enough for them to take a (Legacy) Outback, raise the ride height, stretch the wheelbase, keep the H-6/CVT combo, and they're good to go. I would also think that this is an opportunity for them to introduce additional premium trim levels for their margins.

This is the car Subaru should have been building 5 years ago - it's no looker, but compared to the Tribeca which was hit with the ugly stick it's fine - it would need a H6 diesel to sell in Europe though. I'd have bought one, to replace my Outback.

At least the B9 Tribeca looked different...these days Subaru's are a bit too conservative. I blame it on Toyota

Subaru sells a different crossover in Japan than the Tribeca. We might be getting that one just locally built.

This is the Town and Country type of vehicle that GM should get into fast . It doesn't have the higher platform that regular CUVs and Suvs have , it is in between a car and an Suv in height off the ground . Gives you the benefit of AWD and visibility , but increases the driveability .

Generally, Subaru cross-overs have better ground clearance than many SUVs - and better than any other cross-over. Typically 200mm (8+")

Subaru to build three-row crossover in Indiana

I heard of this a good year or two but no more PR releases or leases! A release date of 2018 still 2 more years away!

Maybe they'll need to buy the Mitsubishi plant in IL...

Good move by Subaru and it is great to hear it will be Made in the U.S.A.

Think Subaru has finally added enough capacity to offer a three row crossover and it will be interesting to see what styling cues are used.

Yeah, i know. I'm sure that no one wants to add capacity, especially since most believe that the market will go soft in 17. About the time that this plant would go on line.

    Recession, here we come!!!

I was never a fan of the Tribeca, needed to be more like the Outback or something. Overall, seems like a no-brainer and something that is needed in their portfolio. Might even snag a few former Acadia owners!!!

Add to the fact that it's a union plant...it would have to sit idle for a certain period (can't remember how long) before it could be started back up as a non-union plant, which is how Subaru runs the Lafayette plant.
