Wink Okay, the Subaru BRZ Is Now Perfect

By Jack Baruth / The Truth About Cars

    June 21, 2013

Last year, the women wept and the teeth were gnashed when we refused to award the Scion FR-S the title of Bestest New Car Spending Marketing Money And Flying People To Fun Places Of 2012. Although we enjoyed the little Subaru to no end — an impression your humble author has since had multiple chances to reinforce at various race tracks and fast roads around the Midwest — it just didn’t bring the heat from one corner to the next.

The good news is that this problem has now been fixed — at a cost of only eighty pounds and perhaps $15,000.

LSXtv has the story on the first LS-swapped Subarota.

My idea of better would be to drop a used LS7 in there with reworked heads and sell off the new Subaru engine and transmission to recoup some of the cost. This will be a popular move as the warranty dissipates and the used market opens up me thinks.

I am surprised the engine fits, but that's cool as hell.
"The car's brilliant and ... a great surprise, pleasant surprise for all Corvette lovers everywhere ... a huge shock to our competitors ... because I don't think anybody was expecting something that good. What pleases me the most about it was that ... I can say this is the first car that's come out, that was done since I left.

What a waste of a great engine.

    This is where it belongs:

Sweet! It's got to be nose heavy though. It'll be a rocket but it might throw off the geometry. I wonder what kind of 1/4 mile times we're looking at. It's a real sleeper. No one would ever expect that.

In wonder how much it weighs after all the upgrades. Figure it needed a lot of drive train/suspension mods to get that power to the ground. Or needs but does not have...I didn't see anything in the article about it

The LS is only 80lbs heavier.

And tiny with a useless rear seat. At that point you might as well get a Vette.

That is what people do not get about the small block. Its an incredibly small engine for the power it makes. You can virtually fit it into a mini. Its probably lighter than the boxer that was there too. The true meaning of power density.

It's a neat concept, I've just never been a fan of crossbreeds in this regard unless there is some provenance/history there to make it gel. Of course, that's my hangup and, so long as this makes the owner happy, more power to him. Were it my car I think a 1UZ Toyota engine in this cars half sister, the FRS, would have been more interesting and a lot easier to sell were the owner ever so inclined. Were I dead set on a LS swap I would likely have looked over at a Saturn Sky or a Pontiac Solstice.

I don't get it, I'd think a $40,000 used Vette would make more sense. They start at a hair under $50,000, so I bet you can get a used one that is only a year or two old....
