News: New Kia Magentis to premiere in Frankfurt

    - All-new four-door D-segment sedan to be revealed at the IAA Motor Show in September
    - Latest model in the complete regeneration of Kia's product range (SEOUL) August 10, 2005 - Kia Motors Corporation today released initial details and photos of its all-new Kia Magentis four-door sedan (also known as Optima in some markets), which will make its world premiere at the Frankfurt International Motor Show on September 13, 2005. Designed at Kia facilities in Korea, the USA and Europe, the new Magentis marks the latest step in the complete regeneration of the Kia product line-up over the last four years.

Longer, wider and higher than the previous model, with an extended 2,720 mm wheelbase, more spacious interior and larger trunk, the stylish new Magentis is a thoroughly modern design, engineered to give Kia a strong challenger for D-segment sales around the world. The new Magentis measures 4,735 mm long, 1,805 mm wide and 1,480 mm tall.

Re: News: New Kia Magentis to premiere in Frankfurt

I was searching for something completely different when I found this article. Figured I would post it so get opinions from others.

I clicked the link knowing the Magentis is the american Optima and was wondering why a picture of the Q or Altima was there because it reminds me of those vehicles from a distance. But then noticing the KIA emblem I though, wow that is quite good looking. This vehicle should sell much better than the current Optima/Magentis, and after seeing the interior it make me even more sure of that.

Only dislike about the exterior I can tell from this photo is the grille, which I can live with. It will be great to see the car in person.

That looks remarkably like the Sonata, doesn't it? Up til now Hyundai and Kia were good at remaining distinct. I hope they don't start grille-swapping!

Yes it does look to be alot similar in exterior design with the Sonata. I was also surprised. I mean, Hyundai was saying how they had seperate design teams for Kia and Hyundai, and yet this design comes out? Seeing the Sportage/Tucson and Spectra/Elantra made me set high expectations. I am a little dissapointed, but the interior is nice and well differentiated from the Sonata.

EDIT : Couple more exterior shots up top.

    Bigger, better, and more images:

Back resembles the Saab 9-3. Not bad overall.

Not loving the grille and headlights, but otherwise, that's a tight looking car. I like the profile and the short rear end. The rear 3/4 view is really great. Very inoffensive overall... but still kinda upscale. This isn't your teachers Kia!

I think GM makes better looking cars in most cases. Kia, like Hyundai, is being safe. I'd oprefer a G6 to this any day... but the Magentis and Sonata are excellent alternatives if you like something more sedate. Malibu was a good attempt... but maybe Chevy needs to be careful, and leave anything out-there to Pontiac.

Re: News: New Kia Magentis to premiere in Frankfurt

I'd wondered why the Sonata didn't continue use of the currently popular headlights-that-flow-into-the-hood theme. Now we know why.

The backs of the Optima and Sonata are very similar, but the fronts are different enough that it'll be fine.

If it weren't for the crummy Kia dealership network in my area and Kia's awful depreciation (both far worse than Hyundai), I'd consider it instead of a Sonata.

Looks like the Optima will offer stuff not found on the Sonata (same as the '05s). That makes me think that the line between Hyundai and Kia is still in a developmental stage. Hyundai was supposed to be luxury and Kia sport, weren't they?

    Like the Magentis?

Sorry...I just find it to be extremely boring. Nothing about this car catches my eye expect for how the front end borrows inspiration from the Infiniti Q45 or Volkswagen Jetta...

Better, Viscen...don't be modest. Despite being a design jigsaw of more established cars, the end result is what I've come to expect from Kia: less attractive than any of the vehicles it borrows from. I thought that no car would ever exceed the current generation Camry's blah factor, yet here comes Kia with a special delivery.

Am I the only one that thinks the Magentis looks like the illegitimate love child of an Acura TSX and Lexus LS430?

The G6 is definitely better, even though it wasn't my cup of tea at first. I tossed in the 'as good as' with the Impala in mind, in case someone came in and accused me of being biased for liking a bland American sedan more than a bland Korean one.

If the G6 and Impala each had different tail lights they would blow this thing out of the water.

Anyway, as for the actual car: The front end isn't any better than the Lucerne's, the rear door looks goofy (just like it does on the BMW it came from), and the chrome trim's fatness behind the rear door looks odd.
