Mitsubishi is closing the doors on its US production as part of a "strategic move," Japan's Nikkei news service reports. According to Automotive News, the company declined to comment on the factory, and instead said it had "no plans to stop selling" vehicles in the United States. That's not what we asked, folks.

According to the Nikkei news, the company is in the process of finding a buyer for is Normal, IL factory, which it opened as part of a joint venture with Chrysler back in 1988. The facility currently employs 918 UAW workers, whose jobs Mitsubishi is attempting to save as part of its negotiations with labor reps. The Normal plant is the only Japanese production facility with UAW representation, Automotive News reports.

Mitsubishi, as a car maker, is in a death spiral. The biggest complaint I've heard about the brand over the last fifteen to twenty years, consistently, is that they build overpriced, boring cars that have mediocre quality control standards. And yet, every single time they discuss revitalizing the brand, they somehow manage to cancel something worthwhile and build yet another car which is even more boring, more overpriced, and more shoddily conceived/constructed than the last new offering.

It's like deciding the best possible solution for a chronic itch is to sit down in a field rife overrun chiggers. Nothings going to get better if these guys keep doing what they have been doing.

Give it time. I read an article on Allpar that claims they had 77K in sales last year. I expect that they will be gone from the US by the end of the decade.

This really was to be a success story for the UAW.
The UAW partners with a Japanese Manufacturer to make World-Class Vehicles.
    A Blue-Collar success story.

Unfortunately, it appears the dream is ending.
Americans no longer care where their cars are made or by whom.
I would be surprised if a pro-American view is even tolerated anymore.

Mitsu sales are slightly up. Like Mazda leaving Flat Rock, Michigan, this could be part of a reorganization and regrouping.

    They need more CUVs though.

Don't they do well in 3rd world countries? They should focus on what they do well. But even that may not be enough, eventually the Chinese will come and probably squeeze them out of the 3rd world....

Zackly. You don't want to be a tail-ender in this business. You wake up some morning and the marketplace has decided your whole reason for living is...well...dead.

How was MMNA Manufacturing Division in Normal, Illinois a success story for the UAW? What exactly did the UAW do to make this facility "world-class"?

The other two Japanese automaker joint-venture plants with UAW represented labor, AutoAlliance International (Mazda-Ford) in Michigan and NUMMI (Toyota-General Motors) in California, also ended production and were sold in the past decade.

Kinda sad, but it boils down to the "Grow or Die" motto.

Mitsubishi's US Market Share peaked in 2002 with 2%, today they have less than 0.5%.

And they bought that 2% with cheap loans that almost killed the company.

I wouldn't want to be running Mitsu, they seem to not have much in the way of options. If I were running it I'd exit all weak markets (USA, Japan, etc) and just stay where I'm strong (Brazil?), defend that turf with my life by investing more to make the best cheap car and then use that knowledge to penetrate new markets. And I'd have my fingers crossed and start some weird daily rituals for good luck and hope it all works.

So has Sergio made sounds about a partnership yet? Mit$u Heavy Indu$trie$ would be a feather in his cap. Mitsu Motors, not so much.
