Lexus LF-FC Concept Unveiled, Previews next LS with Hydrogen Power

We may not have got the flying cars promised by Back to the Future, but Lexus has given drivers a glimpse of the future by unveiling a hydrogen-powered sports car with a hologram on the dash.

The sleek-lined four-door coupe concept car, unveiled at the Tokyo motor show today, sends a clear message that hydrogen-powered cars are the long term future of motoring.

"The future has suddenly got very close," Lexus Australia boss Sean Hanley says.

Hot, but concepts are boring when you know nothing will happen.

Seems like Fisker and Lexus had a baby.

If they can make it remotely as interesting as this concept, then I am interested. The hydrogen -and isn't there talk of autonomous cruiser or something?- aspects if properly marketed can propel this to serious status.

Lexus has a lot of ground to make up as the current car is rather outdated next to the Germans. One of the major things I hope they work on is detail. The stylistic details of the 2007 LS were good, but the interior was still a healthy step down from an Audi or Mercedes competitor. It's too bad they're probably gonna go in a sporty direction because I feel like the heart of the LS was in comfortable excellence.

PS They should use this new LS to debut L-Select globally. It'd be a fantastic alternative to Designo, Exclusive, and Individual.

I lost all faith in concepts when GM failed to produce the G6 as it was in concept form. If there was ever a concept that could easily have been greenlighted (greenlit?), it was that.

It's nice, but the interior is too unrealistic and the exterior is both predictable and too informal. Not enough presence.

    Tails are vaguely Cadillac.

It's nice and I'm sure reality will shape a better execution, but it's too sleek to be formal.

Agreed on the aesthetics. Hope they could keep as much of that interior as possible. A production version of the exterior might have enough formality to it to be elegant and classy, as it needs to be. My favorite LS design was the 2007-2009 design, the 2010-2012 update less so. The current version is just blah, a mishmash of "new Lexus" and "old Lexus" cues. The rear actually reminds me more of the Mirai and redesigned Prius. The most interesting aspect of the car IMO is the fuel cell element. They really need this to be a tech tour de force from Lexus, much like that promo video. I just don't want them to try and make this a Japanese XJ/Panamera/Quattroporte. That's not what the LS is, why it's been successful, and it's not what it should try to become either. Leave that to the supposed new Infiniti flagship.

If this is the next LS, it looks like an RLX.

But, agree on everything you've said.

I really like it. I'd like to see it in the flesh Detroit in January.

I love the interior. The door panel looks great IMHO. Dash looks awesome as well. Still drooling over that door panel...

Two thumbs up overall from me.

That upsweep on the rear window reminds me of the current generation Corolla...

That upsweep has been a Lexus design staple since 2006, long before the current generation Corolla.

I'm waiting for hydrogen cars to happen. Next decade, for sure, they will become like EVs this decade.
