Broke Rav4 door at Toyota dealership

In the market for an Equinox, headed to the local Toyota dealer to check out the Rav 4 that everybody can't stop raving about. Aside from the atrocious styling and cheap interior, one thing I notice right away is that the doors seem to be made of paper...they are so light it is like they are made to be opened and closed with one finger or something. I wasn't sure if what they had in the showroom was just some kind of plastic model or the real thing. I close the door as I normally would in my Malibu and find it wont click closed - guess what?! I broke the thing by shutting it too hard. The metal bent in - if it was metal at all. The salesman comes running over, doesn't blame me, says there must have been some defect in the door locking mechanism. Are you serious? Do people actually buy these cars? Who in their right mind would put their family in one of these cars?

We just finished our first month with our new '14 Equinox. Went to the dealership to test drive a Malibu. Love it.

You are probably just accustomed to using excessive force with your GM vehicles in order to get them to function properly.

Haha Toyota is crap. Get on a Camry and grab the door handle to see it flexing like a cheap toy, it's pathetic.

The best part is most Toyota owners are convinced their cars are vastly better than anything out there.

Q: What do Toyota owners and a bottle of beer have in common?
A: They’re both empty from the neck up.

LOL- I broke a Traverse at a car show trying to figure out the flap thing that covers the gap when the seats go down. I thought it was a storage compartment underneath! I got a little sweaty and walked away.

No. He is probably not used to having to lightly touch sensitive POSs just to get the door closed. JSanders. Stick to the Equinox or Terrain, or even get a Captiva if its available. You shouldn't have to be a weak and soft just to close the door of your CUV.

Back in the late nineties I was trying to impress upon my teenage son how "tinny" the Nissan trucks were. I told him to take his thumb and press down hard on the hood of one at a local Nissan dealer. Low and behold, he left a dent that looked like a golf ball doinked it. We put our hands in our pockets and whistled while we made our way to the car.

Japn trucks today are just as tinny and weak - Nissan Titan and Toyota Tundra have paper thin sheetmetal that dents easily and will not protect you in an accident. Nothing beats how solid the GM trucks car. I looked at an Equinox and the sheet metal is sturdy and solid - they build them right.

Sheet metal is not structural and certainly not meant to protect you in a crash...quite the opposite in fact, it's designed to crumple and absorb the impact. Ever see the YouTube video of the late model Malibu hitting a 50's era Chevy head on? Which one protected it's driver better...the heavy gauge sheet-metaled old Chevy or the new Malibu with thin sheet metal?

And all new cars/trucks have paper thin sheet metal. Ever look at the tops of the bed rails on the GMT900 trucks? Wavier than a lake on windy day. And how about those "bumpers"? I carried my front bumper from my truck when I had it replaced and it weighed about 10 lbs...tops. LOL

I have a new model Equinox V6, Replaced my HHR. The thing is so nice, I cannot believe I have such a freaking nice ride!! Plus, Its a freaking rocket-ship.. Its damn fast for what it is.

I test drove the Rav4 and the CR-V and the escape, and the CX-5 and the RX.. All pieces not that great compared to the Equinox. The RX is nice, but only in materials and quietness, nothing else. . The Equinox is way more powerful and would make quick work of it. It does have a very aggressive launch nanny, but that is probably due to the amount of power it has to put down.

If being seen in a shiny expensive ride is not your thing, just buy a V6 2LT.. you will be very happy.

Re: Broke Rav4 door at Toyota dealership

I traded in an Equinox for a new RAV4 about 7 months ago and I’m happy I did it. Equinox is a piece of crap compared to RAV4. Believe me I owned both of them.
