    So I went to the art store and...................

    Picked up some

    Pencils-

    4H
    3B
    2H
    HB
    6H

    What do these Mean? I know that the softer the lead, the lighter the shade. Great for shading. But, which is softer?

    Also I bought a Kneaded Eraser and A New Drawing Pad. Plus a Sharpener.

    Hardest to Softest:
    6H, 4H, 2H, HB, and 3B.
    I knew that my drafting class would come in handy some day!

    You can engrave silver with 6H you got there. :-)

    Hardest to softest (lightest to darkest respectively):
    6H, 4H, 2H, HB, 3B

    Gumby (kneaded) erasers are pretty good but get really gross quickly if you don't clean them. I prefer white Magic Rub erasers from Staples personally. What did you get for a drawing pad, heavy tooth sketch paper? I usually just grab a ream of general purpose Xerox paper from Staples. Great for sketching (slightly transparent for underlays) and usually cheaper. Did you get an electric sharpener? Those things are incredibly helpful and quick!

    Those are European style pencil hardnesses. The scale starts from 9H and at the opposite end there is 9B. 9H is the hardest and 9B the softest:

    <--- harder softer --->
    9H-8H-7H-6H-5H-4H-3H-2H-H-F-HB-B-2B-3B-4B-5B-6B-7B-8B-9B

    The letters stand for:
    H = hard
    B = black
    F = fine point

    HB is ideal for writing pencils. There is a parallel American scale which uses numbers only like #1 (=B), #3 (=H), etc.

    Oh the mighty 6H, ruined many of my drafting sketches with that little devil, went right through the paper!

    yup, thats (^^^^) all correct.
    pick up a 4B and or 6B too if you wanna darker, shading pencil. cast shadows add depth and the third dimension to the drawing, and the 6B is the best for it. a soft white eraser is also a good tool. I hope you got paper big enough, i hate tiny drawings!
