    Firebird – Trans Am

I believe that the Firebird should be a much lighter and more nimble car than the big zeta coupe that will be Camaro. The Alpha platform for a new Torana would be the better size.

And I think retro is wrong. A new Firebird should push into more modern design while retaining a Pontiac and Firebird image. The chop below started as the Camaro but after distorting it and remaking it I measured it against the original Camaro and it's vitals are:

    Firebird: L= 170.3 WB= 103.2 H=51.9 W=75.1 Tf=60.8
    Camaro: L =186.2 WB= 110.5 H=53.0 W=79.6 Tf=63.8

But as Alpha is designed for I4 and V6 engines, it should be a whole lot lighter. And the Trans Am with twin Turbo 3.6 HFV6 should be a real powerhouse.

May as well chuck this pic on for fun as well.

i like it, though i think that it should look more like a coupe, rather than a hatchback. and i think if they decided to TT V6 would cause some up roar. maybe if you make a buick version, it could have the TT V6.

Re: Modern Firebird – Trans Am

    ,

    Thanks guys,

I did this concept as a reaction to the suspension of all GM RWD due to fuel economy. There is no scientific reason why a FWD is more economical than a RWD. It is all down to marketing dictated design choices.

What Lutz means is that the RWD cars planned are all sports oriented and that means big with big V8's and it often means bold retro styling that is not very aerodynamic. And many of the designs offered for example for the Firebird are not laminar flow friendly.

So I wanted to show that you could create a Firebird style front, which is still bold, yet flows back into the bonnet in a way that allows clean laminar airflow for better fuel economy. And that also a smaller 'Fastback' (not hatch back which weakens the build structure) driven by I4 and V6 engines could also keep the fuel economy figures great.

Yes I would offer a small block, but only on a high cost, high profit limited numbers version so it does not effect CAFE much but is still aspirational.

I would offer low pressure Turbo I4 as base engine, plus 2.8 HFV6, 3.6 HFV6, TT3.6 HFV6, with limited specials using LSx V8. All with no cost choice of 6M and 6A drive trains, preferably mounted as transaxles to keep weight distribution a perfect 50/50 on the heaviest TT3.6 model and down to 55r/45f on the I4T. In the 70’s Alfa introduced the Alfetta sedan and coupe, all with transaxles for better handling. GM should do the same across the board for it’s Alpha platform to both make it cost effective and a truly superior handling chassis that it’s FWD competitors could not compete with.

Because of the front wheels pushed out to the front corners of the car in combination with the rear biased side profile of a fast back provides a centre of pressure behind the centre of gravity, the car will have high speed stability. Even on the rear weight biased lower model. But with 55% of the weight on the rear wheels the entry-level I4T model will have the kind of light precise steering only exotic sports cars usually have.

This is the kind of ‘Transformational’ step that Lutz should introduce to move GM ahead of the pack.

Not what I would ever want the Torana to look like, but it's is nice. Well done.

I really like the last red one. Looks good, very modern and yet recognizable as a T/A.
