A.J. Product Placement - The Opel Lineup in the US

A.J. Product Placement #2 - The Opel Lineup in the US
...and why Saturn should be cut

Opel - European Design. American Imagination.
    US Slogan

The Opel brand in the US focuses on European-infused global cars mixed with cars that Americans love. Every kind of body style that a normal American customer would like to own is present in the brand. However, behind the quality product lies the place where you buy it from - the dealership. Opel's crown jewel is its dealerships - where customers are treated like family, much like the Saturn dealerships that they replaced.

So, who's Saturn up against in the US? Opel pits itself against high-end Toyota and Honda models, as well as all Volkswagen models. However, Opel, being the European-style brand that it is, has the potential to become a serious Volvo competitor for less money.

But, what happened to Saturn? Saturn would be sold to banks as part of a bailout plan for GM. The Saturn dealers would then be converted into Opel dealers, and most Opel products that are sold in Europe would be sold here also. The exceptions would be the Agila, Tigra, Combo, Meriva, Zafira, Vivaro, and Movano.

The Opel US Lineup is split into five trim levels:

Value - the "bare-bones" model. Starts equipped as well a standard LT1 Chevrolet. Cloth seating, manual climate control, etc.
    Elite - the typically-equipped model.
ecoFLEX - the hybrid model - has Elite features as standard, and some luxury features available.
Luxury - the top-end mainstream model. Available navigation, standard leather, etc.
OPC - the performance specialty model. Most OPC models have a turbocharged engine. Most luxury features are standard, and less luxury features are available than the Luxury trim itself.

    And now, the products!

Yes, Saturn has had potential to be a lot of things. Unfortunately, the lack of vision by GM executives damaged the brand beyond repair by changing the product stream too many times.

The brand seems to be trying to be a complete car company without marketing and engineering support necesary.

Just a thought, if Saturn has five trim levels, how many level will Chevrolet have? Also Why have a luxury level if Buick exists?

I have to disagree out of all the GM line up to be honest Saturn is by far the most complete and the best. Really the problem is the name of the brand that no one really respects but the products are money.

I do not believe that any of GM brands are damaged beyond repair, if Hyundai can go from making jokes to a respectable automobiles then so can Saturn.

Re: A.J. Product Placement - The Opel Lineup in the US

Updated - it's now the Opel lineup.

With the Saturn brand potentially being sold to banks as part of the bailout plan, probably the most logical decision would be to bring the Opel lineup over to us in place of Saturn - since most of its products are Opels.

Slight changes have been made also.

I have to believe your right, because that brings up a funny point, several of the veteran technicians I work with have stated that they used to work for or at one time worked at a Hyundai dealer back when they came to america in the late 1980's/early 1990's and said that although they had to do most of their work in warranty, that it was job security, because they would always have work to do.

Thats because no one is opening thei... No im not going to go there.
Saturn can be fixed, but you cant be entry level one day and luxury the next. It needs stepping stones. If its Plastic panel cars with leather seats then so be it.
Of courseADVERTISING would sure help a whole bunch.

I like Saturn and almost bought an Aura a few months ago, but I never liked their image and hate the name Saturn. This is a good list, maybe rid the Omega and add a Merica or Orlando.
