    Impala / Caprice: Contest Rules!

    Hey all you budding artists!

Here's your chance to design a new vehicle.

Entries can be hand drawn, computer designed or photoshopped. You can start from scratch or modify an existing vehicle whether it be from GM or not.

Hand drawn and computer modified images will be voted against seperately. Depending on entries received, further categories could be created.

You can have a maximum of 2 entries in the contest. You may submit more to get feedback on design, but at the end of the contest you must narrow it down to a maximum of 2 entries (2 allowed for chop, 2 allowed for drawn).

We will accept entries for the next few weeks. (Submissions end midnight, Wednesday, June 14th.

Once all entries are in, new threads will be started showing all the entries.

Then all the members get to vote on their favorite three entries.

To submit an entry, just start a new topic in this thread, and post your images.
(Either by linking to it, or uploading it to our server).

    Design Specifications:

Design Chevrolet's next Impala (or Caprice). Large to full size sedan. Whether you go FWD, RWD or 4WD that's up to you. If you want retro or sleek modern styling, that's up to you. Be original. Be creative.

If you are chopping, don't simply change the logo of an already existing car.

It's a design contest, but it's also for IDEA, so even if your skills aren't the best, it's possible your idea could be.
At the end of the contest, you must narrow your entries down to two threads.

It is a design competition, but if you need to write a text-based
explanation of your concept (to accompany the picture), you are more than welcome.

Please do not use ideas, designs or work from previous contests, whether it is your own work or not.

    Good luck!

As usual, if you have any questions, let me know!

Two vehicles per thread? Does this mean we must have one that's the Caprice and another that's Impala? Why two different designs per thread?

1 vehicle per thread. That was accidentally left from the last contest that required 2. Will be fixed asap

Sounds like a great idea since some people here think that we need a new Impala/Caprice.
I'll make a new sig. Later.

So, I'm a Brit who recently relocated to Canada so large sedans like this are new to me. Looking around, was the Caprice derived from the old Impala? The new Impala looks much smaller than the 60s-80s car.

The Impala debuted in '58 on the new "X" frame chassis. It was a few inches lower than the famous 'shoebox' '55 to '57 model, bragged of "over 17 feet of lenth" and was roughly 10% or 350lbs heavier. Impala replaced the "Bel Air" model that debuted with the "hardtop convertible" (so named because, like a convertible, it had no "B" pillar) body in '50 as the most expensive regular series Chevrolet.

Caprice debuted in '65 along with the new perimeter frame chassis and modern, curved side window body. It replaced the Impala as Chevy's most expensive model (except the Corvette of course). While the Impala had emphasized a performance image (The "Impala SS" even became it's own distinct series in '64, owing to the "bucket seat craze"), the Caprice aimed to confer quiet dignity and formal bearing more like Cadillac.

In 1971, the "Biscayne" budget model was cancelled and the Bel Air model became the cheapest and most spartan full size Chevrolet. There was no longer a bucket seat option for the Impala and the "SS" had already died in '70.

In 1976 the "Impala S" replaced the Bel Air as the cheapest full size Chevrolet. The Impala/Caprice Classis was put onto a highly modified version of the 116" wheelbase intermediate chassis for '77 - losing about 600lbs of body weight along with the 400 and 454 V8s. Then the Impala name was cancelled altogether in 1986. The Caprice name had morphed into "Caprice Classic" but in '86 the "Caprice" became the 'cheap' model and it added a "Caprice Classic Brougham" model as the most prestigious.

The basic '77 chassis got a futuristic body for '91 that proved unpopular. It disposed of frumpy trim like the vinyl covered top - practically the '65 Caprices' entire reason for being. In '94 the Impala name was reintroduced only as an "SS" model. It remains a sort of cult classic to this day, but the entire rear drive full sized car chassis was cancelled for '97 so GM could use production capacity for more full size trucks.
