User Reputation Feature - Should We Use It?

Like most forum software, GMI has a built in feature that allows user to rank posts. This ultimately develops the user's "reputation."

Do you think this is something GMI should enable to help improve the quality of posts?

I voted no. We've had a very successful community for a decade now. I'm not sure how this will help us to continue to build that community.

No. Every forum that I have been on that has used it have its members abuse it. People will give negative rep to other members simply because they disagree with each other. They will negative rep a member because they don't like them.

Is there no way that GMI could just have "positive" reinforcement? That is, could there not just be a "Like" button without a "Dislike" button?

I don't understand how it helps. I am on another forum that has it, and I know a few trolls on there with huge reps. It doesn't matter what the "reputation" is IMO.
    Get used to more.

In the other thread at first I was for it, but now I say no.

When someone posts something unpopular we all typically verbalize our distaste - so in essence we are already rating and providing a reason for our like or dislike.

    Nope.

It's just not worth the headache for the moderation team.

Re: User Reputation Feature - Should We Use It?

I've seen forums with points for "helpfulness", which I thought was a nice feature (and those forums were quite civil). But I think reputation points here would just bring out the crazies.

Maybe the rep feature, which I'm suggesting be called "helpfulness", could only be used in the Tech Forum? If it's possible, I would give it a try. That's one area of the site that could use a little boost.

While it would be entertaining to watch the social dynamic of this tool unfold, I can't really support it as I think it would be degrading to the quality and diversity of content on this forum.

I like it in the forums that use it.

(I didn't know BlackGTP and Neanderthal were married!)
