Where is the GM half ton diesel?

    Nissan Titan XD
    Ram Ecodiesel
Now Ford's new diesel F150 will be out within 24 months.

Is GM going to be last to this segment as well?

    Looks like it.

It's a shame too, the 4.5L Duramax was so close to being a reality.

Yup, I remember someone made a post about it either here or AV.

There was a 3/4 ton prototype Suburban sold with a 4.5L Duramax at Barrett-Jackson back when GM was liquidating a bunch of Heritage Collection vehicles during the BK.

Titan XD is in a different weight class.

GM will Probably wait until the next gen trucks at this point. None of their diesel V6's can cut it. They'll probably get Cadillac's v6 diesel. The timing lines up perfectly.

At the moment the midsize diesels can hold it down. It's really no rush the ram and grand cherokee has had the diesel option for a while now.

I would argue it is a rush.

When RAM was the only LD diesel in town, it wasn't a big deal; but when BOTH of your main competitors are offering a diesel 1/2 ton and you don't, it's a problem.

    "Leading from Behind"?

I actually thought GM was going to beat Ford on this one; so either they are keeping it hidden well or they "hit a snag".

Is it a big segment? Does anyone have the sales volume for Ram other than "I see a bunch on the road"? It sounds like a good idea to have a diesel to me (as I do see a bunch on the road), but if it is a small pie will the metrics be there for Ford, Ram and GM all with entrants?

Re: Where is the GM half ton diesel?

The half-ton diesels aren't flying off lots, so I see no need to rush to just have one because everyone else does. The smaller size of the diesels they are using in these trucks generally don't perform any better than their gasoline counterparts. Also, many people are beginning to shy away from diesels unless absolutely necessary due to the strict emission laws, etc. It will be interesting to see how this goes for all the manufacturers. People won't be buying them for the power, for sure, and the slight increased MPG over gasoline won't come close to making up for the added initial cost.

I'm more interested in the next generation gasoline option that GM will have in the HD trucks once they phase out the 6.0. By that time, my Duramax may be near the end of the warranty, too.

Which gas is close to the diesel? Even the small gas 4-banger is 3MPG's less. And that is using Govt ratings, which UNDER rate diesel and OVER rate gas. Its not as close as it seems.

It fits some people's needs and doesn't for others. To each their own. I am glad it is an option and I think a diesel Z71 is a great package.
