Looking at a new 2016 HD and dealer was saying this and that about updates on 2016, possible update for 2017 and maybe complete redesign for the 2018 model year. Any truth to this?
There is currently a thread on this subject, see '2016/2017 3500 HD Updates'. To answer your question, word is there will be a new Duramax and possibly a more powerful gas engine option along with a new grill and hood. I have not heard anything about the next generation, but I would guess it's some time away, maybe 2020?
The update will feature a redesigned 4x4 system with a front solid axle and a class exclusive 8-speed manual transmission. We can hope and dream right?
According to Donlen, 2017 Production startup for HD Crew Cabs 8/18/2016, all other HD's 10/24/2016. My guess is we should have 2017 HD information end of May early June.
They need to get some info out sooner than later. 6.0 is old news and the LML is far under par now. Just had a volume dealer get back to me on pricing if I ordered a light optioned WT LML. $52,670 MSRP (lol). They will only do invoice @ $49,346 + any incentives at time of delivery. That's not going to cut it. Ram volume dealer in town pushing out very comparable if not better (interior option wise) 900tq Cummins for $40,741-$42,300 (depending on options, they have over 60 to choose).
Based on GMs craptastic $1,000 incentive and bad interest rate this month, I can't count on anything good 8-12 weeks from now (estimated build to delivery time).
So to recap, GMs best HD diesel which isn't up to par is $10k higher than the competition. What am I going to do with all these damn Chevy and GM signs in my garage?
I'm thinking it may be more of a start of production deal. Crew cab fires up 10/17, regular and double cab 10/24 (info not from Donlen...). Ordering starts September 1st. So, they have from now until September 1st to show their hand.
On GM media page, under plants and facilities, if you click on DMAX, it gives a line about plant investments for the new 2017 6.6 liter Duramax. Thought it was interesting they called out displacement. I assume it will be a decent power bump, but I'm concerned it may come at a fuel economy cost. The current Duramax is proven and will certainly get the job done. I'm torn to wait and see or order now. If they hold info for a long time I may miss my opportunity to order a 2016.
I'm kind of in the same boat. Been thinking about trading in my Sierra 1500 for a new DMax (or a 1500 w/ the 6.2L). Would like to see what the changes are (drivetrain and body) before I decide to pull the trigger on anything new.
This link...rather interesting and busy info...So far the 2nd half of 15 thing is right for the 1500 trucks (2016 MY). HD refresh due this 2nd half matches what's been rumored. But what I find interesting is the re-engineered bit for the 1500 for 2017. I am willing to bet that it will be a 2018 MY product but man, GM is really sticking to this whole refresh every 2 model years and all new products every 4.
Thanks DMAX FAN. I may just order a 2016 instead of waiting for September. I can always trade in a couple years. Any idea how long DMAX will still produce the current 6.6 Duramax?
smith7629 Till the end of the year for the current Duramax(LML). There was a picture of the new heads they were testing for the 2017 Duramax, at the Defiance Powertrain Plant a few years back.
They produced the LML engine until December 31st 2015. They can still sell LML's in 2016 , just cant produce them per new EPA regulations.
GM stockpiled the LML's, shut down production on January 1st, retool the factory, and then start production of the new duramax (L5P) after they're done retooling.
They wont be producing any engines for that ~2 month window while retooling, which is why they will stock pile LML's before December 31st...so supply will hold out demand for the time when they are shut down/retooling.
Defiance Plant Makes 2017 DMax Beta Blocks
Defiance Plant 1 recently produced the first block castings for the next generation of Duramax engines. These iron block castings will be machined at the GM Powertrain Engineering Headquarters in Pontiac and be used for the 2017 MY Beta test engines. Many thanks to the Defiance folks that helped make these blocks in the core room, foundry and finishing as well as maintenance and the pattern shop. It is important that our plant be involved right from the start with the development of the next great Duramax engine.
August isn't that far away. I suppose I could wait. Might be a couple nice surprises upcoming considering GM's cash situation. My 2014 1500 6.2L w/ brake controller handles the trailer pretty good for now.
Not necessarily just HD news, but I was told GM is taking bids to retool five truck body shops to produce aluminum body panels for their T1 (Silverado/Sierra) trucks.
Ordering information is out on the 2017 1500's, wonder when we will see it for the HD's. GM might not give is H.P./torque figures right away, but I am interested in what engines will be available.
I sure hope so. I'm not sure why this info has been so difficult to come by. I'm not in a rush to get a new truck, but having the info would definitely help push me one way or another. Pretty sure I'll end up with a new Duramax crew cab 4x4, but don't know if it will be a Chevy, a GMC, a 2016, or a 2017. The only other truck I'm really considering right now would be a 1500 crew cab 4x4 w/ the 6.2L. That's another one that might be worth waiting on though since the 10-speed is supposedly on its way soon. Decisions, decisions...
