Why Does Buick never build concepts?

Avista, Avenir, Velite, Bengal, Riviera 2007, Riviera 2013, Cielo, Velite, and now Enspire. So many cool cars that never get built. Anyone know why?

Re: Why Does Buick never build concepts?

First off, the Enspire came out today, you weren't really expecting a production car at the dealership the same day the concept is unveiled?
You listed Velite twice, so you're really only legitimately listing 7 vehicles. Yea, I know......; there's a bunch more Buick concepts.

This is NO DIFFERENT than many other OEMs. Look how many concepts BMW has shown & never built:
Why wasn't the current gen 7-series the 2010 Concept CS?
    Where's the goofball CS Vintage?
The lines the GINA Light Visionary were sleek (AS LONG AS no one ever opened the doors, of course).
The Vision Roadster also had some stylistic ideas very worthy of pursuing.
Instead BMW just keeps grinding out the same tired recycled garbage.

Maybe most of those other OEMs just don't build as inspirational of a concept as Buick.

It's a shame that Buick doesn't build one of their gorgeous convertible or coupe concepts. They've been flirting around with the idea for years.

Re: Why Does Buick never build concepts?

Because they overreach with their concepts, conceptualizing vehicles that a brand as weak and unsubstantiated as Buick could never support without serious investment. The brand certainly COULD support them, and that investment is certainly possible, but before you invest a penny you have to invest YOURSELF, and nobody at GM is willing to do so.

Why is nobody willing to stick their neck out? I think we must look no further than JdN. He led a brand (and a "project) conceptually backed by GM itself as part of a STRATEGIC initiative to enhance the company's competitiveness, and he was forced out for (my guess) political reasons.

When someone who thinks they have a bigger **** than you figures out it's not as big as they think, they get rid of you. Success is toxic to incompetence.

Buick is a conservative brand straddling classes. Its concepts are intended for attention, not production. Think of them as halo models that never see production.

I'm sure they're still spooked by Reatta.

I agree with everything said above and an additional two cents to add to it.

Most often a concept is testing design directions, seeing what the reaction will be. So if positively received, we see elements of that concept car in future product. Sadly, those elements appear very watered down in comparison to the concept car. Look at the Avenier vs. the new "Avenier" trim level. The Avenier Lacrosse is beautiful to my eyes, possibly one of the best looking fwd cars out there. But it is still just a candle vs. the 1,000 watt spotlight that was the Avenier concept.

Quite simply, Cadillac doesn't want them too.
"The car's brilliant and ... a great surprise, pleasant surprise for all Corvette lovers everywhere ... a huge shock to our competitors ... because I don't think anybody was expecting something that good. What pleases me the most about it was that ... I can say this is the first car that's come out, that was done since I left.

Most OEMs do. Mercedes wouldn't even "invest in iteself" by pulling the trigger on the imminently producible Ener-G Force concept. The current "redesigned" G-wagon is about the laziest effort a next generation vehicle could possibly be.

If Mercedes built that stupid concept they would have alienated G-Wagen enthusiasts. It was alright, but it was sacrilegious as a G. I don't even like the rounded front end of the new one. Authenticity and heritage are important when you design icons.

One man's 'authenticity' is another man's 'W-Body Impala'.

Nobody was selling W-bodies to celebrities for $120k-$250k, and nobody cared when it finally left.

I dunno- I sure read a LOT of conversation back then about it's longevity -with a strong negative cast- for a car 'nobody cared about'. No; I'm not saying it was beloved.

Daimler had the chance to re-image the G into what it actually is positioned as- their flagship SUV. Didn't have to be the Ener G Force verbatim, but certainly could have been brought into the 21st century.

MB is another brand that has shown dozens upon dozens of pie-inna-sky concepts it never builds. Standard practice.

I was not totally serious btw, but Buick concepts are the best GM designs of late, better then Caddy imo.
