    northstar engine

    Hi guys
    I'm looking at a 2002 Eldorado with 65,ooo miles.
It's a California car and in show room condition.
Should I stay away from it because of engine head gasket issues and tranny issues.?, are these problems real or exaggerated .

    Thanks

The head gasket isnt as big of a deal as it once was. Northstar specialists in TX, Canada, Michigan, Ohio, and other places can do it for $1100-$2500.

What adds up quickly are age-related items like wheel bearings, tie rods, electronic suspension, electrical accessories, and steering hardware.

Keep some cash set aside for the unexpected and enjoy it.

    Re: northstar engine

So at what mileage do these problems start appearing ...or are they more random and can happen at low millage also?
I appreciate any info you can give me especially on the 2002 engine.Did GM ever work out these problems or stop making the engine altogether? If you think I should stay away from this car I will.
I really like this car but I need it to be reasonably reliable on long trips.

    Thanks again!!

    Re: northstar engine

Seems like a random issue, some folks had it happen at low miles while some never had a problem. I've owned quite a few and never had an issue with any.

Algoma...............The pre-2003 N-stars suffer from the "pulled headbolt issue" !

You never can tell when it will happen.
Google n-star headgasket or pulled head bolt issues.............

Many cases on the net so use caution or buy a 2004 or newer n-star!
(deeper head bolt holes and new design thread bolts)

    I have/had 5 n-star 1996 and up Deville/DTS vehicles and never had a issue.

If you have your heart set on a Eldorado a late 80s, early 90s
one with the 4.5 or 4.9 is the ticket!
Those motors run like a watch...........

    AVOID any 4100 v-8 model!

Technically, updates to bolt thread pitch were made in 2000 and 2004 (for 2005 MY Deville DTS (but not DHS or base) and 2006+ DTS). The best way to avoid these issues is to ride a bicycle.

    Re: northstar engine

2000+ the rate of failure is much lower on HG. I had an '03 SLS that's now my F-i-L's at 88K no HG issues. My recently passed father also has an '03 SLS at 61K miles, no HG issues. Replacing the dexcool at the 5 year period is also highly recommended.

The 4T80 trans itself is fairly stout. The common issue is the torque converter lockup solenoid failing which keeps the TCC from locking in OD. The car will drive fine but it eventually throws a code. $30 part buried in $2K of labor. My '03 developed this around 80k miles. Have to sneak it thru OBD2 test by leaving the car out of OD. The other SLS has not exhibited this yet.

Northstar-cars always seem to be hit or miss. For every story with "I've put 250k on mine, it's the best engine ever created" you hear a horror story
