Cadillac Plastic Lower Door Panels Question

I have been reading many complaints here about the "cheap, hard-surface plastic" that Cadillac uses on its lower door panels, the sides of the lower center console, and the seat backs. Its been a long time since I have been inside a Mercedes, Lexus, BMW, etc. What do those manufacturers use in these areas?

    Soft plastic or leather.

But since we're talking about Cadillacs using cheap hard plastic, lets look at two Cadillac interiors that are within a couple thousand dollars of each other, the CTS and CT6. The CT6 is the car that's talked about when the hard plastic thing comes up.

    CTS

Note the abundant soft leather applied generously all over the door panel, from top to bottom. There is zero hard black plastic slabs on this beautiful door panel, only high quality materials that look and feel great to the touch from top to bottom.

    CT6

Ah, the CT6. The "Black Plastic Special". Note all the black plastic all over the door panel, from top to bottom.

For example, moving the seat control switches to the door was a great idea and a nice touch, but look at the way they're implemented. Not only are they cheap chunks of plastic, but the entire area surrounding the controls looks and feels just as cheap if not cheaper, and is about the lowest grade plastic you can find.

Cadillac's own ELR and XT5 have better seat control switches.

    ELR

    XT5

    CT6

Moving on, let's look at the door panel. Look at it, and notice that the ENTIRE LOWER DOOR PANEL IS ALL BLACK PLASTIC!!!! Unacceptable, especially at that price range. And this isn't a nicely grained or textured plastic, either. It's Rubbermaid quality at best. Truly awful.

Cadillac's own ATS, their cheapest car, manages to use leather all the way down:

Whereas Cadillac's "flagship" CT6 uses that terrible plastic down there. Unacceptable.

You asked about seat backs. Let's look at those, again using the CTS and CT6.

    CTS

    CT6

That one should be pretty much self explanatory.

Look at the hunk of black plastic on the CT6's seat back, and compare it to the nicely contoured leather on the CTS's seat back. Again, details. Cadillac is more than capable of acing things like that, but they mysteriously didn't on the CT6.

Not pictured but present on the CT6 and not on other Cadillacs costing less than it are the cheap black plastic door lock pins, cheap plastic going down the center console, and thin and cheap carpet, among other things.

Agreed. There are some major oversights going on in the CT6. I much prefer the door panel designs and materials of the ATS and CTS. On ATS premiums, the back of the seats are now the micro-suede..

Oh nice! Is that on 2016s? I haven't been in a newer (2016) Premium.

EDIT: I just did a search on cars.com. Looks like it's only there on cars with the Kona Brown or Morello Red extra cost interiors.

That CT6 must have been a base model? The one I saw had a full leather door and back seat panels. But the argument is, should there be a "base" CT6? Isn't that what the CTS is for?

I think other thann the Platinum trim, I don't think any of those plastic bits would keep me from buying the CT6.

Side note, does anyone know if the back of the front seats is plastic when you have the rear entertainment package? It looks leather in the pictures.

How many more cents per vehicle would it cost to carpet that area?

I have had sleep disturbances regarding plastic lower door panels. I'm thinking of suing!

There's a perfect clip from Joan Cusack in "Working Girl" that would suit perfectly, but sadly I can't find it on YouTube...

Every CT6 has the hard plastic problem, including the Platinum. The particular CT6 pictured in my post was a Premium Luxury 3.6L AWD.

I agree with you in that there shouldn't be a "Base" CT6. No point, especially if Cadillac decides that the CTS will live on.

I haven't been in a production CT6 with the rear seating package, but one of the cars I sat in last year with it had leather there, so yes, the plastic becomes leather when you opt for that package.

Also, from the looks of things, the back I'd the seats in the S550 has a bit of plastic on it was well.

I'm no plastics-stroker, and rarely comment on this stuff, but that's the least inspired seatback I can recall. I would expect better in a Chevrolet Beat...

I think this is Photoshopped, that has Pontiac Aztek written all over it!

    Where?

The Genesis G90 and Lincoln Continental are nicer and use better materials than the CT6 in the back seat as well for similar, or less money.

I'm surprised no one has complained about the lower door panels of the Escalade. The refreshed Navigator covers everything nicely in soft, stitched materials, even though the shapes and ergonomics are getting old.
