I see where the idea for the 1971 boat-tail Riviera came from.
One designer said that the biggest problem with the 1971-73 Riviera was that is was too wide for the design. And I can see here that if it had wound up on the smaller A-Body platform, it most likely would have been more a successful design.
This is the '63 Pontiac Scorpian, XP-758. Note the split grille, and this pic with detail tweaks and Pontiac 8-lug rims :
This is what I've seen called the Buick Scorpian, tho I've not seen corroborating sources on that name. It does look related to the Pontiac :
These 2 remind me of the '54 'Corvette siblings' program where Pontiac, Cadillac, Olds & Buick tried out concept versions of the 'Vette. I wonder if there were Chevy, Olds versions of this program.

I wish they all could be California squirrels!

You still have the Pontiac in the O/P tho- the overhead shot. Looks like the Buick has a conventional backlight vs. the Pontiac's boattail.
I wish there was a clearer shot of the Buick- can't quite make out what exactly is going on on that front fascia; looks like a black rubber bullet in the center (?).
