~2020 Cadillac "CT3": What Do YOU Think Should It Be Like?

There's been much discussion here on what updates would make the ATS refresh a better product and a better seller. But looking farther down the road, it's probably time to consider what Cadillac needs the full redesign to be. There's only so much to speculate on regarding output, pricing, etc. But we can still think about what Cadillac needs their entry-luxury sedan/coupe to be like in concept and persona.

    What say you?

Re: ~2020 Cadillac "CT3": What Do YOU Think Should It Be Like?

What I would propose for Cadillac is something edgier and less conventional. Assuming Alpha is still around, use a wheelbase only slightly shorter than the current CTS and only slightly shorter, but similar in width. Then put a much more aggressive, "4D coupe" roofline on it. So in many ways it might be sized much like a CC or such, but this size is to give it both a stunning sense of style as well as enough space to still be reasonably spacious for an entry-luxury sedan as well. This would still be shorter and narrower than something like an A7, and still able to retain low weight. The next CTS (CT5?) is something I think should be more of a shorter CT6 in wheelbase and track, but with more style. So it'd be on the large end of midsize dimensions and therefore much roomier than would this CT3, so I don't have concerns that it'd be perceived to be too similar to larger Cadillacs. As for that style, military stealth! It should look downright mean. Not like most 4D coupes which are beautiful and flowing. It should be creased and chiseled.

The idea of doing a conventional compact sedan is hardly a "wrong" one, but the market is absolutely saturated with options, which is why I think that Cadillac needs to do something more unique. A perfect example in the industry is, of course, Lexus' ES. It wasn't a replication of a compact BMW sport sedan of that era, or other smaller and sportier European sedans. Lexus went their own way, something that is in line with what they wanted the brand to be. Cadillac is known for style, and they should provide a whole lot of that. I am not ignoring the rest of what makes a product good of course. They need the right engines, an excellent interior, etc. But this is the basis for what I think Cadillac's entry sedan should be. Of course dynamics should be competitive, but that simply cannot be what Cadillac makes the central component of their product. Other brands have a much stronger reputation for that, BMW in particular, and Cadillac doesn't need to waste time trying to re-brand themselves in that sense. Core values at Cadillac should be style, prestige, and innovation, things the brand has tremendous history in doing. Sell it as a sedan, a coupe, and potentially a convertible. A wagon would be awesome from an enthusiast's perspective, but in reality I think we have to realize that its only real market would be Europe, where this wouldn't sell in significant numbers anyway.

    (in today's dollars)

    $32,000 - 1.5T, 220 hp/220 lb-ft - 8AT (optional e-AWD)
    $37,000 - 2.0T, 300 hp/300 lb-ft - 8AT (optional e-AWD)
    $42,000 - 2.0T PHEV, 335 horsepower - 8AT (optional e-AWD)
    $47,000 - 3.0TT, 400 hp/400 lb-ft - 8AT - (optional e-AWD)
    $65,000 - 3.0TT AWD-PHEV system, 525 horsepower - 8AT

Instead of the 3.0TT, a more futuristic idea: Could even modify their latest PHEV system to be an plug-in hybrid AWD system with closer to 400 horsepower, replacing both the PHEV and 3.0TT versions. Volvo achieves 400 horsepower from their plug-in tech based around a 2.0L I-4. Main difference would probably be Cadillac using a turbo whereas Volvo uses both a turbo and supercharger.

I think it should come out 2 years sooner

Better interior than XT5. Better interior space, better headroom, better sunroof packaging, body styling more in line with Ciel and Elmiraj.

More muscle, more flair, more flare, more sculpting, fewer traceable lines. Just more drama, less business, more sophistication.

    Better quality parts.

    Pretty much.
I would also expect Cadillac to create a CT3 family. Not just a sedan and coupe -- but convertible and wagon.

I'd like ATS to stay roughly the same size but have better interior packaging. Not to mention better quality parts and materials.

I've already told you about this vehicle, and the CT2, and the CT5, and the CT7, and CT8. I've told you about the XT2, XT4, XT7, XT8, and XT9.

This discussion is less about what it will be versus what a given poster thinks it should be.

    I want a V8 V, LGW Vsport, 2.0 base engine, plugin/hybrid option.

If it is for Europe also then it will also need some base engine (150-170 HP),
    V series...naturally aspirated v8 with 520 hp, and 8 000 rpm...but 3.0 l TT v6 AWD and 500 hp could also work

    Cadillac doesn't need another sedan....

They need an xT 3 AWD crossover...off ATS chassis and they need it fast.

Consumers are downsizing one size and getting the space from the box.

Oh I was just talking about the US spec engines.

This isn't an additional sedan. It's the ATS replacement.
