Re: Tom Stevens discusses the G8....Again

I hope to see it return. I just commented on the "what % of Pontiac owners will GM retain?" thread that I'm sadly going for a Fusion Sport this time around. But if it doesn't work out I'll be getting my arse over to Pontiac. I had a dealer quote me $26490 base price (without taxes, fees, dmv). It's so hard not to use my GM card and other affinity rebates... I'm just worried about parts. I keep reading people who've waited 2-4 weeks for a part (eg alternator, suspension crap, oil pan). So that bumped Fusion up to "Plan A". However, if the Commodore returns to Chevy or Caddy for a reasonable price, the drooling will resume for sure!!

I totally agree with the earlier post. The GT owns the Taurus SHO in terms of fun-to-drive.... just perhaps not "technology". A Chevy Caprice/Impala would probably fix that easily.

The big killer for could again be the exchange rate. They are predicting parity between the currencies by the end of 09 (ie $AUD1 = $USD1) so that could be the death nell for an Aussie built car.

That's why it has to be built in North America.

Oshawa's more than capable of taking on Commodore production.

I am not so sure it will make parity but the USD has taken a dive and the Aussie is strong even against Chinese CNY. It is back to CNY6.02 to AUD1 which is what it was eighteen months ago.

I think a lot of the poor sales had to do with the economy being in meltdown mode for most of the time the car was on sale. And the 2009.5 model (with Bluetooth and satellite sadio) should have been the way the car was released in the first place. Throw in poor Pontiac recognition and advertising as well. I really do think it would do better as a Chevy flagship.

The LaCrosse should have been on this platform- I have yet to hear a convincing argument to the contrary (everytime I see the LaCrosse I drool over the prospect of the general design being adjusted for RWD proportions). But that is water under the bridge I'm afraid.

Drove both the ford taurus and the Pontiac G8 GT..

As far as comparing the ford fusion to a similiarly priced Pontiac G8 GT..

No question if it were my money being spent....I'd go for the G8 GT anyday of the week..

If only the Camaro was released as a Firebird. All that Camaro demand transferred to a much small Pontiac dealer network would have saved the brand. Camaro would have sold just as well as a Firebird, and people would have discovered the G8.

All that lip service about Pontiac being the "performance division." Then why was the new Camaro not the new Firebird? I don't mean build a Camaro and a Firebird necessarily. If they only wanted one f-body, it should have been a Firebird.
Drives a 2019 Cadillac ATS Coupe and a 1988 Pontiac Trans Am GTA.

In the past, I've had a 5th gen Camaro, a CTS sedan and coupe, two 3rd gen Firebird Formulas, a convertible 4th gen Trans Am, a Reatta, a couple of Monte Carlos, an Avenger coupe, a couple of Cavalier hatchbacks, a Saturn SC1, and a Cherokee.

I heard somewhere that there was talks in bringing a consumer-grade g8-based Caddilac offering. Caddillac has the rear wheel drive already, and they would be easily able to command the higher price to ensure that it was profitable (similarly to how GMC's are mostly just more expensive chevy trucks)

I bet the LAPD 'cop car g8 caprice' deal that is in the final stages will help strengthen the zeta-bring-back lasso in NA.

Bring Back the G8 in some form!
