    Grand Prix Special Edition...AWD?

So I was driving a long and what do ya know, I'm following a 2001ish white Grand Prix with an interesting spoiler and funky kind of a rail like lip running along both sides of the roofline. I look closer at the badging and it has "Special Edition" stamped in to the plastic on the bumper and "AWD" following "Grand Prix". I got next to it for a bit and saw the GTP badging behind the front wheel wells. We got on the freeway and he bolted going about 90 so I didn't get to see much else.

Am I just a complete idiot and there was an AWD Grand Prix or is this truly something strange? Any thoughts?

I've never heard of an AWD GP before...or a Special Edition for that matter. If there is one, I wonder why GM didn't make it a regular option. I bet if they had, they would've sold more of them. Good sighting.

There is a Special Edition 2001 & 2003 Grand Prix, but it isn't AWD. The Special Edition package gives you a different spoiler and some interior trim pieces and I think it was in white colour.

The MS2000 platform was never offered with AWD. The mechanicals are available to do it since the related minivans have had Versatrac AWD. But I don't know if the fuel tank on the MS2000 allows for a driveshaft.

Probably just a driver that added a decal

The special addition also added embroidered seats, if I remember correctly. And a new looking badge. But no mechanical changes. I think it was a 40th Anniversary Special Edition, but I could be confusing it with something else.

If it had AWD, I would've traded in my GTP long ago for that thing.

I thought they had a special edition GP with a supercharged 3.8. An anniversary edition or something. About 03' or so.

The supercharged 3.8 is the GTP model. Maybe this guy did some custom work and converted it to AWD. I went to school with someone who converted a Corsica to AWD...

That was my initial thought until I started seeing the little details that were different. The special edition was imprinted into the plastic (which is what really got me thinking more seriously about it) but the AWD look like it was most likely a decal. But why would someone add an AWD decal. I understand people who through on "SS" and such. Anyhow, one final not on the sighting. He looked like he had just come down from the mountain (Mt Hood) and he had on snow tires on all four wheels. This doesn't add anything in and of its self, but I thought it was interesting none the less.

Thanks for the comments everyone!...for putting my mind at ease a little bit. I like to humor myself and think that I know a lot about cars, and I knew the w-bodies have never had AWD, so I'm glad this wasn't a common package that I never knew about.

    Re: Grand Prix Special Edition...AWD?

No "production" W-body has had awd, but GM did build a show car based on the GP with Magna Steyr's Versatrak awd and a smallblock V8.

There are a few shady people who use details like this to scam ignorant car buyers, like the "32V" 4.9 L Cadillac Seville.

    Re: Grand Prix Special Edition...AWD?

acutally there was a Grand Prix awd concept. I saw it in person at the NY auto show, just cant remeber what year it was. It had an LS1 in it. I think they were testing the idea of what is now today the GXP, V8 impala and monte.

too bad they never put that into production.

If there is an AWD GP I've never heard of it. Maybe it is just added badging.

People add badges all the time. I saw an avalanche out back the other day with SS badging on it. There is also a guy in town with a 97 2wd with Z71 stickers. I hate it when people do that. I might as well stick SS on my wife's Montana.

Oh yea, stuck on hood scoops look stupid

    Re: Grand Prix Special Edition...AWD?

My wife has a 2000 Grand Prix GTP with the special Daytona 500 Pace Car package. According to the badge on the center console, it is one of 2000 made. The car has the roof rails, twin air vents on the hood and a NASCAR inspired rear spoiler. Inside, the leather seats are two-tone with Daytona 500 embroidery on the seatbacks. It is loaded, including HUD. I believe in 2003 the 40th anniversary edition was available. From what I know it had the same exterior differences as the Daytona Grand Prix. I don't believe there is any all-wheel-drive version.
