GM Quashed Pontiac's 1982 Turbo Trans Am

Pontiac for the 1982 model year had planned to give performance superiority to its light and super aerodynamic all-new 1982 Trans Am with its Turbo 301 cubic-inch (4.9 liter) V8. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be, here's the real story of how the 1982 Trans Am almost became a performance legend and the lowdown of what this Turbo 301 V8 option could have meant for the third generation Trans Am of the 1980s decade.

It would have been the fastest American built 1982 model year car. Easily besting the 1982 Corvette.
And that seems to be the answer. GM's edict - No car shall be faster than the Corvette. Ford had a similar motto for the Mustang.

the Buick 3.8 TURBO V6 would have been an "interesting" choice EX if they stuck with it as there mainline engine leaving the Camaro to use "old" tech V8's - remember the Turbo daytona and later the eagle talon was consider a rival if not "better" car

The bad old days really were that bad. It's surprising the imports didn't make even more inroads.

GM's edict seems to be USA-only (?) and not applying to this 1982 Holden Commodore eg: Being legally identified as a GM-Holden vehicle, and sold from new & warranteed through GM-Holden dealers.

I loved the front ends of the 79 through 82 models.

The 3rd gen Firebird would have been so much more interesting had GM allowed Pontiac to keep producing the 301.
Pony Car: an affordable, compact, highly styled car with a sporty or performance-oriented image and an available V8.

They did put that engine into the Firebird, but I think towards the end of the 80's. I remember it being very fast.

The 301 turbo motor was a horrible motor of its day.

Maybe there would have been improvements but the previous gen 301 turbo of an absolute piece of xxxx

Couldn't Pontiac have taken the 305 and added the the turbo to that motor?

I was thinking 1 part to NOT be the Camaro "restyled" and 2 a LOT of press was praising the NEW turbo 4 pots as the NEXT BEST THING
    and a 3.8 V6 base + 3.8L Turbo for the "UP" motor
imagine HOW much "further" that motor would have gone with 10 years of firebird ON TOP of the regal / grand national / GNX

I think for the 3RD gen it would have been as much motor as the 5.0L NON-vette beating Camaro

If I recall correctly they were working on a turbo 2.8V6 for the updated Fiero and that was shut down also because it would have embarrassed the Corvette.

First (used) car out of HS was an '80 Monte Carlo Turbo. It was OK. Gave it to my father, and within a year he blow the motor. (or it was time to die)
