    G8 Insurance: Surprisingly Cheap

Since I'm very close to pulling the trigger on trading my 2006 G6 GTP on a 2009 G8 GT, I went and got a quote on the insurance difference. Being under 25, I was worried that a V8 sedan that is built in Australia would have a killer insurance price. Um, nope. Not at all.

It turns out that the insurance on the G8 GT will only be about $35 more a year than what I pay for my G6 that is 3 years old! Actually, it is one of the cheapest cars to insure that I have looked at.

    I'm shocked.

And it's a larger, safer car. That's why older Buicks and Oldsmobiles are the least expensive cars to insure on the road, bar none! I asked the insurance company why my 1993 Sonoma was actually cheaper than my 1987 Plymouth Reliant to insure. They told me because the truck is bigger, safer and carries fewer people. It didn't matter that it had an engine almost twice as big as the K-car and 5 years newer, it was cheaper to insure.

Wait, I'm younger than nsap? How do you have two brand new cars?

Thanks for the information. That is definately a plus for G8 GT on my consideration list the next time around. The practicality (enormous back seat and trunk) and driving experience make this a great candidate for my next car along with Taurus, LaCrosse, and CTS Wagon.

That almost makes the G8 a slam dunk. All it needs is slightly better fuel mileage and a stick, and it would be the perfect car.

Yeah, and supposedly the insurance company sees "GTP" as a performance moniker and "GT" as just an up-level trim. Which is dumb considering the G8 GT has a badass V8 and my G6 GTP has a 3.9L V6..... Oh well I'm not complaining!

I assumed it would cost a small fortune to insure due to it being Australian and parts are likely costly if body work needs done.

Yes, I'm sure I'm younger. I've never disclosed my age on GMI and probably won't ever. I will say that I am a college student. The Focus is owned by my parents; they drive it when they need it and I drive it when I need it. We all have our own vehicles, the Focus is just a shared one. And no, I'm not some spoiled college kid that his parents buy him new vehicles. My parents have NEVER paid for my vehicles and never will. Frankly it would degrade me if I had to have my parents pay for my vehicles.

Just an FYI...I had the agent quote the G8 GT with my parents as the primary drivers instead of me (since my price is inflated due to age) and the costs would be UNDER $300 a YEAR for them to be on it! That is some of the cheapest insurance I have ever quoted period. So if you're an adult with a good record...its dirt cheap to insure. We are with State Farm by the way.

Yes it does. If insurance was going to be a small fortune that would have killed the dream for me. As for mileage...it is rated the same as my GTP, so I'm not too concerned. The GTP has always surprised me mileage wise in relation to my driving habits.

Great... thanks nsap. That means its likely cheaper than my Colorado for insurance too, since the 2WDs are rated pretty poorly (i.e. higher premiums). Now, I've gone from very interested in the G8 GT to "on the fence". The only thing keeping me from trying to buy one now is not going on a test drive.

I finally saw a G8 in the wild last night too -- only a V6 model, but looked sweet. It brought back fond memories of past Pontiacs in my life, such as my parents 68 Pontiac Parisienne Coupe and my 76 Pontiac Ventura.
    Current Rides:
05 Colorado EC LS 2WD I5 5M in Sunburnt Orange
    13 VW Tiguan (wife's)
    02 Honda VTX 1800C

    Past Favorite Rides:
02 Pontiac Trans Am WS6 6M --> still miss it!
76 Pontiac Ventura Coupe 260ci V8 A3 (all time fav)

Go drive on...you'll fully jump over the fence!!

When I drove the GT it sold me on it. The car is so WELL BEHAVED. It's amazing. It is like the Corvette...extremely good manners when you are driving "normally" and not wanting to have fun with it. But take it out for a joy ride and you can have hours of fun with it!!

It's also a great highway cruiser. I took it out on the interstate...it's quiet and comfortable. Plus it barely hits 2000 rpm going 75!

Thats what I'm afraid of. I'm not ready to buy a car just yet, but I still like to stop by dealers and take a test drive every now and then (Don't worry, I tell the salesperson upfront I have no intention of buying upfront. Usually its the salesperson that insists on the test drive). The G8 is the one car I refuse to test drive because I know my wife will have to pry me out of the front seat.

Really? My 4wd Canyon costs me and my wife $108 a year to fully insure. But I guess thats because we have our home, life, and other car insurance through state farm, not to mention our area is cheap to insure.

I really have my eye on an '08 G8, it is the grey color with the 3.6l....I was quoted at $19500 (sticker was 27,500)! It was a great car, not the GT (tested that as well), but the 3.6l holds it's own and frankly is a little more fun then a front wheel drive Mali.

He can afford two cars since he live in the basement of his parents house. (I am just joking with you.)
