    G6 vs. Deer

    Yep,
Coming back from our Thanksgiving trip to see the parents I got myself a mule deer. Around a blind corner with a steep embankment, a deer came up right over it and froze right in front of me. The deer didn't win but it went out getting some revenge. The impact was at about 45-50 mph.

My wife and I are just fine, no injuries. The car? Not so good. After I pulled over and stopped, the car stalled. It starts back up but idles really rough and if you put it into gear it stalls. Plus the radiator is gone. Coolant was pouring out everywhere. I will have to wait until it gets to the shop to find out what all is wrong with it.

Of course all of this happened outside of cell coverage too. Nothing like spending a couple of hours on the side of the road. Our three hour road trip turned into a 7 hour trip. The car won't show up here until tomorrow.

I will keep you posted on the extent of the damage.

Nope, the airbags did not go off. The only thing I can think of is it hit the hood, not the front bumper. There aren't any sensors in the hood. Or, the deer just didn't weigh enough.

Luckily no blood or anything gory, it just bounced off and flew through the air. Honestly I don't know if I killed it or not. I couldn't see it anywhere. There were some tufts of hair left behind though.

Yes, the dogs were pretty excited.

Ouch. I have hit 3 deer in my driving lifetime, they are never fun (Each caused over $1,000 in damage). Consider yourself lucky though that the deer didn't go through the front windshield. That could have been really really bad.

    Re: G6 vs. Deer

    Glad you're ok.

My dad and I were going to Atlantic City on the PA Turnpike in 06, right before the car had it's first birthday. Hit the deer at about 70 MPH, as there wasn't much time to react. I was in the passenger seat at the time, and thought it was coming through the glass at me. We must have scooped the deer up though, as it was on the same side as yours, but it left a big dent instead of crumple the hood, and took out the light and cracked the bumper. It too needed a new radiator, but we were lucky enough that it only broke a rad support, so it was still drivable. The airbags didn't deploy on us either. Damage was a few pennies under 3k. For as fast as we hit the thing, I was suprised at how well the car held up. It was also the first time I can recall ever seeing a deer go airborne, doing a sumersault.

I just traded my 06 lease in and bought an 08. 2 days after I bought it, I was coming home from work, and came around a blind corner to find a deer standing in the middle of the lane staring at me. Lucky for me it was late enough, and I could maneuver around it without worrying about oncoming traffic....all while sneaking out a few F BOMBS for almost dinging up my new ride. Tis the season I guess.

    UPDATE!!!!!

No structural damage was found. Mostly just needs sheet metal replaced. Also radiator and supports and a few other misc. ite

    Total Estimated Bill................$5700

Should have it back to me in about 2-1/2 weeks.

It is not cheap to hit a deer.

    Re: G6 vs. Deer

airbags didnt go off because its not the impact that sets them off, its how fast you slow down.

glad to hear your ok, couldve been worse. insurance covers it i assume?

LOL! I can imagine they were!

Glad you both are OK ... that's what counts. Sorry it happened, of course, but glad for no structural damage and you'll have it back relatively soon....
