    Funny NHTSA Complaint

Going through some NHTSA complaints about the headlights and stumbled on this gem from January 27 of this year:

THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS HAVING AN ELECTRICAL SWITCH MALFUNCTION, WHICH AFFECTED THE TURN SIGNALS AND HEADLIGHTS. WHEN THE DRIVER SIDE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH WAS ACTIVATED, THE HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS AUTOMATICALLY ACTIVATED. WHEN THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF, THE HEADLIGHTS AUTOMATICALLY ACTIVATED, FORCING THE CONTACT TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY IN THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 200,000.

Oh, and it wasn't just the one time it popped up, there were at least 3 of them...

They really were in bad shape back then--and I mean that in the same way you would remember a ex-junkie friend who's pulled it together after several years clean.

    Before they relapse.

Wait for something to tank the economy and watch how those overpriced cars fill rented storage lots again before they figure out they need to lay off.

    There's a storm coming...

Humorous but let's think a bit about this.

Used to things were wired directly. So it was either a fuse, wire, battery, switch or bulb.
Basically, even if you had to strap a replacement turn lever (from JC Whitney) to the steering column you could fix it. No matter how old.
But today everything goes through the computer. Try finding all the computer parts for a 10 year old vehicle.

We should start importing cars from Cuber.

    I don't get it.

Is this a legitimate complaint or someone who is accidentally activating the high beams when they use their turn signal? They're on the same stalk on both my Silverado and F-150.

When it's dark enough for the headlights to come on they'll stay on as approach/security lighting on both my current trucks. GM products have done this for the last 15 years.

    Just like a Merkur!

Maybe I should complain to NHTSA about my turn signal / hazard stalk.
It's gone AWOL a couple of times but some wiggling of the hazard button got it going again.
I mean, the car's only got 43K miles. (Never mind that it's 28 years old).

This is one time when they say "They all do that", they actually all do that.
