    Unhappy 5 years gone by

5 years to the day GM officially declared the death of Pontiac. I will never forget (or forgive for that matter) Drive em and enjoy them, then restore them if you can. Keep the hope alive that they may come back some day.

I'm a Ford guy, but Pontiac with the GTO, Firebirds, and especially the big 60's Catalina and Grand Prix was my number two! I won't hold my breath for their return any more than I foresee a rebirth of Mercury. The current market conditions make all those extra brands an anchor around GM and Ford, the only way I could see a revival would be if someone purchased the rights to the name and they were an independent company which we know won't happen.

    One of my favorite Pontiacs:

No that's how long since there has been a decent Malibu or Impala.

    Re: 5 years gone by

To me, there were the DeLorean-era Pontiacs, which included some programs and people beyond his tenure like the SD455, and the rest which are a series of hits (6000STE, 3800Turbo Trans Am, Fiero, first FWD Bonneville SE) misses (too many base version that offered little more than any other division) and missed opportunities (the idea behind the Aztec -- a car-based crossover, was right on if poorly executed).

There were a lot of great Pontiacs, but in the 80s and 90s too many average Pontiacs that diluted the brand. many will disagree, but I think the boldness of Pontiac lives on in the best of GMs performance cars.

With rare exception the great Pontiac died in the late 70's. There were a few very good Pontiac cars afterward, but most were far to derivative of Chevy's and the last great Pontiac wasn't even an American designed or built car. For me the great Pontiac existed between the early 60's and mid 70's, a relatively short period of time in which they were on top of their game!

    Re: 5 years gone by

Most of them were rebadges by that time anyway, so why bother.

Gonna spiff up the old Pontiac Vibe and the family Montana. Right.

    Trolls be trollin'

Friends don't let trolls drive Pontiacs.

Keepin' the flame alive and others can suck it!!!

Maybe I can troll on over to the Buick threads and rag on them for awhile. A little turnabout should be fair game I say.

Yes let's spiff up the old Terazza instead.

I'd love to see that happen. Plus, they could buy the rights to Oakland, and GM could give up GMC as well.

Pontiac, MI could have something to be proud about!

Have owned 8 Pontiacs, none of them rebadges, built offshore or possessing other Division's engines. Still have 2 (tho 1 will have to go this year). Late '50s thru the early 70s saw some fantastic cars.

I, too, would hope to see a return of a 'niche Pontiac'; a few hardcore models here & there- that would be unprecedented historically and done right; have high potential.

    Re: 5 years gone by

Despite the unlikelihood, I still firmly believe Pontiac is the one jettisoned nameplate that has an established following STRONG & LOYAL enough to return as a successful niche performance brand. Just imagine all the FREE publicity & marketing GM would receive just by making the announcement. The GMI detractors alone would keep the news at the forefront FOREVER extolling their opinions that all Pontiac's are just re-badged Chevy's. WOO HOO, bring it on!!
