Worst Car Wednesday will delve into how and why some truly horrible mass-produced cars were ever created. We set the stage and report on how consumers reacted and what the manufacturers did to “fix” their mistakes. Look, we know there are fans for some of these creations. We are some of those fans. But the facts belie martyrdom. For our first stab at Worst Car Wednesday we look at the disastrous spectacle of the 1970s Buick and Oldsmobile Aerobacks. It wasn’t pretty.

Going on the record - I actually liked the Oldsmobile 442 Aeroback.

Those fastbacks always struck me as odd, even before I was interested in cars. Interesting that the Buick sales dropped substantially more as a % of sales vs. the Chevy.

Amazing how these made it to production. I get what they article says about them looking snazzy in artist renderings, but didn't somebody say something once the clay mockups were done?

Motor Biscuit is one of the worst sites online. Huge lack of knowledge and mostly stupid opinion.

I wish that 442 would have been a hatch. I really think it would have sold quite well...

I disagree, though it is hard to evaluate how a car would have been perceived 40+ years ago. Though I'd have to say the sales tanking probably tells us the market didn't like the looks.

    They were Horrible Cars!

My Mom, had a 1981 Omega 2dr Brougham, It was traded "out of cycle" My Dad would buy 1 New car every 3 years, so it was the 1978 Monte Carlo's turn to be traded. Even though it had a Major Hit, he kept it, then sold it to me in 1982, traded the Omega in 1983 for another Monte Carlo.

My Sister inlaw, came to town in a "Ski Jump" Buick Skylark 80-81?? Blue with Decals!! Both the X Cars were V6's and both were Horrible examples of GM's Moving forward to FWD.

Growing up a friend Dad had one. He called it the "buttless cutlass".

Here's a review of 1979 Buick Century Coupe Aeroback Turbo, from the June 1979 issue of Car and Driver:

It could be interesting to imagine if someone painted it black put a Grand National front end along with the turbo V6 of the late years to create a phantom car: Buick Century Grand National.

Re: Worst Car Wednesday: Disasterous Buick, Oldsmobile 1970s GM Aerobacks

The Aerobacks might have sold better if they had been Malibu and LeMans models and if they had actually been hatchbacks instead of offering small trunks with no fold-down rear seat, IIRC.

I just read the OP's article then the author's credentials. Designer-turned-writer (should have included alternative historian); that explains it.
