Toyota RAV4 Diesel ... for the US??

The Toyota RAV4 Diesel is said to be making up about 30% of RAV4 sales in Australia.

Toyota RAV4 Diesel 2013: Road Test

How does 6.2L/100km [37.9 mpg(US)] user experience sound for 80% highway?

A possible candidate for the US?
It is important what WE use as our "moral compass" and ...
the "measuring stick" chosen for judging progress/success as well.

    44 mpg by 2010 ... 2013?

110HP and 250lb/ft of TQ? Not sure many would bite on that one in the US.

You wouldn't want the Aussie spec one as they just doubled its official tow rating from 500kg to 1 tonne. I think that is about 1100 pounds uprated to 2200 pounds approx. IMHO that is a pathetic number for a diesel as the petrol model can to more.

The problem is the vast majority of Americans are ignorant to diesel. We won't buy a 110hp/250tq diesel because 110hp sounds too low yet they'll turn right around and buy the exact same RAV4 in the gas model with 176hp/172tq not realizing the diesel would offer them better performance and mpg.

I dont think the diesel will offer better performance but it will offer better MPG for sure. I've had a diesel with about the same power and it was not a performance machine at all.

You are absolutely right and that's what I was referring to in my unclear comment. The MPG would undoubtedly be better and the light towing that this class would do would be better off as well. Nobody would (or more importantly should) be towing a 20' Chaparral behind a RAV4.

As much as I love diesel and would like to see it as an option in more vehicles in North America I'd probably be more compelled to purchase a small crossover with a turbo gasser. I recently spent some time driving a new Ford Escape Ecoboost and was incredibly impressed with the engine performance and fuel economy. I was averaging just under 7L/100km in the city. I can report highway fuel economy tomorrow as I'll be getting the vehicle back from my mom who took it on a 2,500+km road trip from Calgary to Vancouver Island.

With that being said, I am really looking forward to trying out the Mazda CX-5 SkyActiv diesel (if and when it comes to Canada.)
Research is what I am doing when I don't know what I am doing.
