Renault Trafic/Opel Vivaro coming to America?

I was driving home tonight and spotted a strange looking van on the road. As I got closer I noticed the Renault diamond logo. It was a Renault Trafic van. I was expecting a Mexican plate, as strange European cars from Mexico are actually quite common here, but it was wearing a Michigan manufacturer plate. Google revealed that there is an Opel badged version of the same van called Vivaro. Could GM be bringing it here? Possibly a competitor to the upcoming Ford Transit Connect?

I wonder if the old Astro/Safari crowd would go for this kind of jobbie?

That would replace the Express/Savana and compete with the Econoline (now E-series) or regular Transit... if it's indeed coming here.

I'd imagine the prime competition to be the Dodge / Freightliner / Mercedes Sprinter no

I'm sure anyone would eye that market, for years it was stagnant but big volume, when the Sprinter hit the scene everything was turned upside down

Comparing Econoline sales figures to Sprinter sales figures, I'm sure GM doesn't know which route to take, especially considering they're swimming in cash at the moment.

Further investigation reveals there's also a Nissan version called the Primastar. I would imagine it would make more sense if it came here as a Nissan and not from GM since it was a Renault that was driving around.

The size seemed more comparable to an Astro than the Express.

OK, sorry, I thought we were talking about the Movano (Renault Master)... Yes, this is smaller.

(That's what I get for scrolling quickly by the pics.)

I thought they meant Movano also. They look the same anyway

I kinda like it. I like funky looking vehicles, and this one definitely fits that bill.

You took the words right out of my mouth.....I think it'd be both cool and practical here in the U.S. as a Nissan.

In real life, this thing is hideous. Yes, even for a commercial vehicle. Having said that, they are quite popular here, so it must be for good reason.

Re: Renault Trafic/Opel Vivaro coming to America?

    HI.

I,m very interested in your post as i,m trying to import one of the opel vivaro vans. I,ve just returned from the UK where i am from. There the Vauxhall Vivaro version is very popular. They have a 2.0ltr 4 cyl turbo desiel engine and most owners get 35-40 mpg on a Uk gallon (4.5ltrs as compares to us gallon which is 3.8ltrs ) So do the math and they should do 30-35 ish in the US. They are fast as well as they are light compared to the chev or gmc vans, but they are still GM products. Also the load floor is low and easier to get stuff in and out. I do carpentry and this van would suit me as it suits thousands of tradesmen in europe. If they are coming here i may wait instead of trying to import.
