Re: It's Father's Day - What cars has your dad owned?

My Dad really didnt have a lot of vehicles in the time he drove which was about 45 years.

1955 Plymouth Savoy. Just a beater to get him around in high school.

1963 Impala Super Sport. He loved this car and thus it was one of his favorites when we would talk cars. The transmission went out and he traded it. He always said in hindsight he should have kept it and fixed it.

1968 Impala 2-door formal roof. He liked this one too but not as much as the 1963. The 307 engine started hogging oil right at 100,000 miles. Seems this was common on those Chevrolet 307 engines. It also rusted around the rear wheelwells.

1970 Bel-Air 4-door. He was dissapointed in this car. It was a rustbucket. I remember him constantly fixing rust on this one. The frame at the end was pretty bad also. Welded thr right side but the left was nearly gone. Before that happened the engine blew a head gasket at 93,000 miles. It had a 350 which made him surprised it did that.

1978 Impala 4-door. This car made up for the 1970. The body held up really well, the marginal 305 held until 136,000 miles which is more than the past ones did. Sold it with 146,000 miles still running perfectly.

1985 Caprice(I have this now). Another of his favorites. Bought it in May of 1990 with 75,000 miles. It now has 120,230 miles on it. Rebuilt transmission and a few other things but it is in great shape.

1992 Olds Cutlass Ciera. This one was the other dissapointment. The 2.5 liter 4 cylinder used oil and it neede front brakes every 30,000 miles or so. It replaced the 1978 Impala.

1996 Buick Centry. He traded the 1992 for this and it was basiclly the same car but it fixed a few things the 1992 had. This one had the 3.1 liter V6 and it was better on brakes.

2002 Impala. He had the Centry in for some injector work when he found a good deal on a new 2002 tan Impala. His first brand new car and he was thrilled.

2005 Equinox. He found the Equinox easier to get into with his bad knees and he liked a lot of other things about it. He got a good lease deal on it so he went for it. He died a little more than 2 years into the agreement and Mom just gave it back.

    She bought a 2007 Aveo.
    2008 Chevrolet Impala LS.

1981 Pontiac Bonneville. "The last full sized RWD Bonneville".

    1985 Chevrolet Caprice.

    2007 Sears Craftsman Lawn Tractor.

    1986 John Deere Lawn Tractor.

my dad still has his 1993 GMC Sierra (it's amazing that it's still alive after all these years) he had other vehicles but I cannot think of them at the moment. My mom did own a Plymouth satellite back when she was in high school but she sold it to some kid who promptly wrecked it. (a decision that still bugs 454 to this very day every time he sees one on the road)

There were a couple Cutlasses. A used late '60s/early '70s Supreme? coupe, then an '83 Cutlass Calais, '86 Grand Am (special ordered, with manual shift!), then used my mother's '84 Omni as his daily for 5 years, followed by the '89 Skyhawk for 5 months, then beginning a string of Saturns: '96 SL2, '98 SL1, '05 VUE, '08 Aura.

The Cutlasses are remembered most fondly I believe, and to a lesser extent the Grand Am.

Re: It's Father's Day - What cars has your dad owned?

He learned to drive on my grandpa's '58 Chevy Yeoman. Grandpa's was Yellow.

His first car was a brand new yellow with black stripes '69 Camaro Z28.

He then bought a Marina Blue '69 Stringray which was stolen from him.

    A brief fling with a '71 Pinto.

Then it was a host of '72-'76 Impalas and Caprices.

    Then a '78 Chevy Luv.

    Then a '89 Chevy Silverado 4x4.

    Then a '91 bare bones Chevy S10.

    Then a '95 S-10 he converted into a SS.

Followed by a '99 Wrangler Sport (which he still has) along with the Cobalt LTZ he bought in '06 because the ride of the Jeep was getting to rough for him for everyday travel.

65 Mustang (six cyl, boring, he never speaks of it)

68 Camaro 327 V8 (he drag/street raced this car in high school. put lots of time and money into it cause he beat the crap out of it so bad)

?? VW Rabbit (dunno anything about it. His parents wanted him out of the Camaro and he wanted something economical)

    ?? Dodge Pickup

*His was not a lil red express but he wanted to convert his into one.

60's Chevy Pickup (V8, he restored it while taking automotive classes to become a mechanic)

*New* 1984 Chevrolet S-10 (2.8 V6 4x4, He/We had this throughout my entire childhood. The engine was SO weak -110hp- but it was loved. I miss it)

    *Actual Photo

1995 Chevrolet Blazer (4.3 V6, 4dr, 4x4 - He still has this and we like it a lot. We thought 195hp, 250lbft was a BEAST after that 2.8. I took the test for my driver's license in this cause I couldn't parallel park the 2001 S-10 ext cab they bought for me. It has 180k+ miles on it, though it did leave us on the side of the a few hundred miles from home once. The central spider injector died. Except for that rather unfortunate event it has been solid.)

    *Actual Photo

My Dad, save for the 3 non GMs that he didn't care for as evidenced by the fact that I don't even know the model years, is 100% a GM man.

Heck, he is actually 100% CHEVY. He doesn't even like other GM brands. (he is a mechanic so he knows exactly how illogical this is). When he was looking at that 95 Blazer we also looked at a GMC Jimmy that had leather and was cheaper! But nope, it didn't have a bowtie so no go.

I'm "liberal" cause I like Buick, Olds etc. I also LOVE Caddys which he absolutely HATES (he works on them and...well...a Northstar is not as mechanic friendly as the 3.1, 3.8, or 4.3).

I don't remember all of them, but the one he seems to have liked the most was his Plymouth Arrow.

It was apparently a fun little car. He owned a Charger too, before the Arrow I think.

After my parents got together, he speaks highly of their old Accord

(Not sure of the year. Based on what he's told me I think '83 is about right)

    and their Tempo

Others include an '85? LTD wagon, '84 Town Car, '87 Crown Victoria, '92 Cutlass Ciera wagon, '92 GMC Safari (yes, the one that became mine), and now he has a giant work van.

Used 1934 Buick Series 90, grandfather's hand-me-down (bought new!) I'm sure its this very car, sentimentally kept until mid-1950s

New 1948~49? Morris Minor MM Lowlite sedan identical to this, kept 10 years.

New 1959 Holden FC Business sedan, battleship grey, kept 10 years ('Special' model shown)

Used Goggomobile sedan 330cc twin, BRG, late 1950s model similar to this. A 'get to work' car, kept 4 years

New 1969 Ford XT Falcon 500 wagon. silver. Kept 14 years. Indestructible.

New 1984 Ford Telstar Ghia (Mazda 626 clone) white, awful car, similar-ish to this.

Re: It's Father's Day - What cars has your dad owned?

My dad owned a lot of cars. He worked for GM Fisher Body for 30 years, so mostly GM cars, although when he was young, I know that there was a Ford or two in there.

I know that he had a '57 Bel Air convertible, but that was well before my time.

The earliest car that I remember him having was a Bonneville convertible. Probably about a '67.

In '69, he bought his first Cadillac, a Sedan Deville. He bought a new Cadillac every year until 1982, except 1981. That '69 was the only sedan he bought; all the others were Eldorados or Coupe Devilles. In 1981, he switched to a beautiful Buick Riviera because he did not like idea of the V-8-6-4 engine in the Cadillacs. He had a regular buyer that would buy his year-old Cadillacs when he placed his order for a new one.

The Cadillacs were his regular cars. He always owned a second car too, for when his Cadillacs were on order, and for me and my sisters to drive. The first was a '69 Nova. There was a '74 Ventura, four Chevettes ('77, '79, '81, '85), an '80 Citation, and an '82 J-2000.

After he retired, he bought less expensive cars than Cadillacs but he still liked getting new cars often. There was a Chevy Celebrity Eurosport, Pontiac 6000 LE, a couple of Geo Prisms, a Grand Am, two Sunfires, several Cavaliers, and a Malibu. His last car was a Saturn ION.

I miss my Dad. He died about 1 1/2 year ago.
