Infiniti to move forward with 'Nissan-plus' strategy for its future cars

“We will bring back Infiniti as Nissan-plus, in terms of product and technology," Gupta told Automotive News. “Infiniti will be great again.”

Historically-speaking, Infiniti has been “Nissan-plus” for a long time over the years. Many vehicles in its lineup have been re-skinned versions of Nissans with some luxury thrown into the mix, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. There have been some standouts, namely the original Q45 with its pioneering active suspension and shockingly sporty dynamics. And then there are the G coupes and sedans, vehicles that are still desirable to enthusiasts today.

That does not sound like a good game plan for a luxury brand. Though if talking electrics then it might be ok because they seem to be a lot more flexible.

Were they not always Nissans with leather?

I wish they would have maintained their tie-up with Mercedes-Benz. The QX30 wasn't a great seller, but it was something different for the Infiniti brand and wasn't doused in Nissan. They could have extended the partnership to other vehicle segments.

NOW if POST Renault Nissan can start making good or at least OK cars then we might have something
if we could get the early 2000's Nissan back they could have SOME success on this plan

Meaning that they're going to do a successor to the I35 (Infiniti Maxima) to gen up entry level sedan sales and kill off the Q70 (M37/56).

The QX80 sells well and is very profitable for Infiniti and its dealers. The QX80 and a couple of crossovers are probably enough for Infiniti.

Yes, with a few exceptions. As DequindreToo mentioned, Q30 and QX30, which was discontinued last year, was based on the X156 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class and had no Nissan branded counterpart. Also, some lower end Infiniti models including the Q30/QX30 did not come standard with leather upholstery.

I always liked the J30 because it was unique, maybe not the best style, but unique and looked substantial. I think it was shared with a Nissan in Japan...

Infiniti started out with promise to me, had a couple of unique looking products - the Q and the J, attention getting commercials when they launched Infiniti. Seemed promising even though a lot of the other Infinit's looked like Nissan's with "Infiniti" on them.

That model was one of my favorite Infiniti cars too. It was actually designed by an American, Jerry Hirshberg - the same man that penned the 1971 Buick Riviera when he worked under Bill Mitchell at General Motors.

In Japan, the J30 was known as the Nissan Leopard J.Ferie and could be equipped with the VH series 4.1L V8 engine (U.S. market J30 only offered Nissan's VG series 3.0L V6).

What changed from that era? They seemed to have strong direction and then lost their way. Did they lose a key leader? Or, I guess it was their brush with bankruptcy in the early 2000's that sucked the life out of Infiniti.
