The Astro was killed in 2005, but it's apparently popular with the current #vanlife crowd.

Do you remember the Chevrolet Astro? We’re betting you do, even if you weren’t around when the not-so-mini minivan debuted in 1985. It endured for 20 years, and along with its GMC Safari twin, over 3 million units ultimately found homes. The front-engine/rear-drive platform never changed, and with available all-wheel-drive, they were pretty useful in low-traction situations. Yes, they had issues and let’s not forget, they endured the height of GM’s monochromatic plastic-for-everything interior design. But the recent #vanlife revolution has brought these spacious, capable machines back into favor with a cult following that yearns for an Astro reboot.

We present bringbacktheastro.com, a website devoted to convincing Chevrolet that a new Astro would be a smart move. Supporting the argument is a passionate “proposition of astronomical proportions” that’s actually a rather moving eulogy to the gone-but-not-forgotten van. More importantly, it highlights the #vanlife movement that is now embracing the Astro as a platform to build custom campers for overland adventures.

An electric Astro van could certainly be a reasonable replacement.

That's that I am thinking. To compete with the upcoming VW EV van.

Astro had quite a following in Japan not too long ago, even though the vehicle wasn't sold through official channels in that country.

We(my parents) had one back in the day w/ velvet 2nd row captains chairs and a third row which folded down into a bed. The thing was massive by today's minivan standards. They should bring it back BTW as an actual minivan to go against the Odyssey, Sienna, and Pacifica.

Agreed. They make out like passenger cars are on the way out or dead, well then how about something like this that gives the ride height that the SUV offers and more flexibility as well. Heck, make them both ICE and electric even if they want to.

I switched from a Minivan to a Large CUV and I can tell you while the CUV looks more visually appealing, the usefulness of the minivan blows it out of the water. It was easier to get in-out of, the floor was flatter, seat higher, and there was more cargo space. Crossovers are just popular because Americans care more about what other people think than what's practical.

The market is ripe for these vans....especially one with the "A-Team Package".

Perhaps GM's current minivan offering, the China domestic market Buick GL8, can be used as the basis for a new generation Chevrolet Astro?

First they'd need to do something with the styling and that odd side profile.

Too narrow for American asses. those GL8s are about 4 inches narrower than the smallest US minivan.

Good point. Looks like GL8 is about 4 inches narrower than the Chevy Astro, too.

Always liked the Astro. Still one of the cleanest and best looking vehicles. I'll never own a FWD based minivan (working on my MIL's Grand Caravan was a pain). But I could see owning a new version of a RWD Astro.

Yeah to that. Trendiness, what's cool, and the "mommy van" tag they got in the '90s I think turned lots of people away to something cooler and more IN.

It would take an incredible ad campaign, and a company dedicated to blowing up the minivan category with yooj sales.

I thought Toyota did an an excellent campaign with their Venza, but sales slowed and for whatever reason they didn't push. That looked like a combination of utility with style but nyetski.

It would probably take years of great advertising to overcome resistance, but it could probably be done.
