LUTZ WISHES PEOPLE AT WORK LIKED CARS.

    - When GM hired 112-year-old warhorse Bob Lutz as their product development boss the company talked proudly of how he was a real "car guy". Now Detroit sources say the enthusiastic pensioner is becoming increasingly depressed because no one in the company wants to talk about cars. "Bob seems real down at the moment," said one insider. "He's always wandering about the design offices showing people pictures of new cars and trying to talk about them but I guess the guys here just aren't interested. Poor fella, I guess if he wants to discuss cars he's come to the wrong place".

However, some of Lutz's colleagues were less sympathetic. Sources say some employees are starting to avoid the elderly driving fan if at all possible and have been heard muttering phrases such as "Oh Christ, here comes that guy who likes cars". "Jeez, I wish he'd shut up about the cars already," said one manager. "God, the way he goes on you'd think GM was an auto maker or something. Dammit, we're a pensions and healthcare business, we don't have time to worry about cars".

Lutz looks for someone to talk about over lunch, yesterday.

I think you should qualify this posting as coming from a satire website.

Coming from a website called sniffpetrol would be dead giveaway, but there might be more truth to this than we think.

If this is true, here is one car guy he can hire. Id sit down with him and talk cars all day if he hires me. If I worked in product development, under Lutz, I think that would be one of the best jobs ever, as long as I get to beat up on the bean counters.
    Lutz, I am your guy.

    You mean this Issue: http://www.sniffpetrol.com/issue015.html

It's an old issue - but still funny as hell...

Here what "Dirty Bob Lutz" said to GM Engineers:

UK March 2002 SNIFF PETROL Issue 15

"REDESIGN IT, BITCH!" SHOUTS TOOLED UP LUTZ

    - Bob Lutz, the man charged with turning around GM's fortunes in North America, is employing some interesting new tactics in order to ensure that forthcoming models are more desirable. Sources say the gnarly war veteran has decided that actions speak louder than words, and that carrying a large handgun speaks loudest of all.

Employees first became aware that the 107-year-old 'car guy' was packing a piece when he was on a tour of the company's Orion Assembly Plant in Michigan. "Bob had been assured that end-of-line rectification was at an all time low," reported one observer. "Clearly the figures weren't good enough. Before we knew it he pulled out a revolver and started pistol-whipping our quality audit guys. I guess he was pretty pissed."

However, more was to come on a visit to GM's vast design studio complex in Warren, Michigan. Onlookers say Lutz noticed the signed off lower facia roll design for a forthcoming Chevrolet model and became immediately enraged at its unattractive shape and weak shutline resolution. When told that altering the plastic trim panel would add to the project cost Lutz is said to have pulled out his trusty shooter and aimed it at a senior designer's head yelling "Redesign the goddam moulding motherf*cker! Go on, redesign it, bitch!"

"Bob's getting serious," confided one GM insider. "Last I saw him he was heading home to get his L39 jet fighter. Oh god! Call the cops! He's strafing the purchasing offices…"

Lutz successfully negotiates the repositioning of the front fog lamps on the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, in 2002.

You know, I'd suspect that the real problem would be getting the bean counters and corner cutters throughout GM's bureaucracy to be car guys. I mean, as a certified car nut, if you were hired to purchase the cheapest nuts and bolts for a platform the engineers built, you'd be looking for the best ones you could find.

But if you were some Michigan State Accounting grad, you'd just look for the cheapest way to get it done, and wouldn't care if that bolt seized with rust five years later in a Salt Belt state, and sheared off under stress. Yeah, thanks GM.

I've always thought these large corporations like GM, who mission is clearly to be in the business of cars, or Xerox or RR Donnelley, where I've worked before, in the business of printing,...should do their absolute best to hire people who were involved in and cared about that core business they were in. With a company like GM, how hard would it have to be to find bona fide car guys out there to do these sort of jobs, even outside of engineering?
