    Beijing: GMC Savana debut?!?

Didn't see this on any English language sites, but ironically came across it on an Italian autosite that I frequent:

    SOURCE: http://www.autoblog.it/post/41673/gm...hino-2012-live

Seems that GM brought over a GMC Savana to demonstrate the customability and personalization of their full-sized vans. The article points out that some of the highlights are leather wrapped interior, climate control zones, on-board fridge, etc.

Does anyone know anything more about this? I wasn't aware that GMC existed in the Chinese market, mostly because smaller trucks/SUVs are handled by SGM's Wuling subsidiary.

The Chinese market is known to love "chauffeur" style vehicles, as the endless lengthened and bespoke versions of the 3-Series L, A6L, E-Class L, and SLS can attribute. What's more, the Chinese are know to love cars that are lavish in creature-comforts, much like the American market.

Could this be GM's way of taking an alternative stab at this market (or open up a new segment altogether) by introducing GMC to China?

-One of our Savanas at work.

Gotta love how ancient these vans really are...but I honestly don't see much of a reason to completely overhaul them. They work well.

Oh, yeah, I forgot about his love of all things van-like.

Since I'm so utterly out of the loop with school, what happened to Ming, anyway?

Its amazing how fresh of a design these vans still have. It really has aged well. Considering their primary use as a work vehicle in fleets there isn't a reason to really update them aside from minor tweaks that happen as refinement on other vehicles.

Let me guess.... loaded down with stuff frequently and driven hard/put away wet, right?

I didn't even know they had fancied up the cluster on the vans with those chrome trim rings, plus full trip computer, its looks decent, also, the M selector in the quadrant is kinda funny, just what I want, to play pretend stick shift on a cargo van!

That interior is very swank, too bad custom van sales have petered out here in the US.

This is actually a really smart move, and connect to another story that the Chinese are in a growth for large luxury vehicles. I can see this being a huge seller in China.

No, mainly to transport drivers to relief points.

Let's just say when you're used to having bury the accelerator pedal to get a bus going, that habit spreads to lesser vehicles...

Wow. You never see passenger vehicles that big in China. Every time I go there for business (x2 so far this year) I marvel at the number of Buick GL8 minivans running around. This Savana would dwarf them. However, I would not want to drive this thing in Shanghai traffic!

    Re: Beijing: GMC Savana debut?!?

This looks like little more than an in-house Conversion Van. Which is sort of passe here in America. But in China, it might not be.

However, I do sort of wonder if it'd be a good idea for GMC to release a Denali version of the Savana. Give it standard AWD, the 6.2L V8, sliders on both sides, upgraded interior trim and sound insulation, 2nd row captain's chairs, and the kinds of features you'd find on the Yukon Denali. Seems to me you'd have a neat package for larger families. Especially ones that might not be into gaudy conversion van cliches.

GMC could bring out versions of the Savana compete in the same market that high-end Sprinters do...the mobile office/private jet on wheels sort of idea.
    Peace,

    Autoplaybook
