Why I Race a Crapcan Buick

Why I Race a Crapcan Buick
    The Truth About Cars
    By: Kamil Kaluski

Mark [Stevenson] recently asked me a question: “Why do you race a Buick?”

No one has ever asked me that directly. Frankly, I didn’t have a specific answer. My team and I were simply playing by the strict-ish-ly simple 24 Hours of Lemons rule: “Vehicles must be acquired and prepared for a maximum of $500.”

The rest is history — but that wouldn’t make for a good story. So, to find a more specific reason, I looked back at the history of our battered Buick.

Lots of people who participate in spectator races in my area use old Buicks or Saturns. When you ask them why they will simply tell you that they are bullet proof cars and you can put them through hell and still expect them to live.

At least it sounds like you're having a lot of fun doing this from what I gather in reading the story.

Went to my first demolition derby this summer, just as a joke.

Turns out that I love them and really want to participate. I don't have the space to store a car like that right now, but I'm definitely going to do it in a few years when I do.

LeMons would be up there, too.

I've done a demo derby before. Be prepared for exhilaration. And a concussion. http://www.autos.ca/motoring-memorie...00-ford-focus/

There's definitely truth to that; the Buicks of that era in particular were some of the most reliable things on the road. I'd still be plenty happy to own one.

Our team was on hiatus for 2015, but I race in the 24 Hrs of Lemons also, with a 1999 Mercury Cougar. I definitely recognized the Buick right away when I saw it on the front page!

We've raced at Monticello Motor Club, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, New Jersey Motorsports Park, and Summit Point.

Hoping to get back out there for this year!

She was so clean when we started...

Mark, you're a savage. The V8 class was my favorite, but I feel like they're a guaranteed concussion. The one I went to also ran minivans and SUVs for the first time.

in these parts there is a chain of auto wreckers called bucks auto and they ONLY deal in the OLD and cheap wrecks and in Winnipeg they have a GM+ trucks lot and a EVERYTHING else lot
the GM one is FULL of J and W body cars from the 80-90 and newer as NO "better" breakers bid on them so CHEAP and VERY plentiful parts

One of the most amusing pieces I have read on GMI. The rear spoiler is too much. I sure it's best application would be in "bench" racing.
