V8 Supercars Voted Most Entertaining, Exciting And Innovative Sport In Australia

    V8 Supercars Australia
    8 February 2011
    www.v8supercars.com.au

The V8 Supercars Championship is commanding plenty of attention internationally, but latest research shows the world’s best touring car category continues to keep Australian sports fans on the edge of their seats.

A research survey report of the general population compiled by globally recognised information provider Repucom lists V8 Supercars as the most entertaining, exciting and innovative sport in the country in those individual categories.

The general public was asked to rank sports by certain catch phrases.

V8 Supercars was ranked ahead of tennis and the AFL as the most entertaining, rugby league and rugby union as the most exciting and cricket and football (soccer) as the most innovative.

V8 Supercars was ranked second in the Australian category and second in the 'competitive' category behind AFL and rugby league respectively. It was ahead of rugby league (Australian) and tennis (competitive) in those two categories.

V8 Supercars CEO Martin Whitaker said to take out the top spot in these incredibly competitive categories ahead of the country’s most established sports is a massive achievement and a significant boost for the Championship as it heads to Abu Dhabi for the season opener this week.

“To know that V8 Supercar racing is leading the way when it comes to entertainment, excitement and innovation is extremely humbling for all involved in this growth sport,” Mr Whitaker said.

“While we are excited and passionate about taking V8 Supercar racing overseas, we first and foremost want to keep our intensely loyal Australian fans entertained and this research proves we are doing just that.”

The 2010 report introduced a new category asking sports fans what they thought was Australia’s most ‘innovative’ sport. V8 Supercars won the new category along with the most exciting and most entertaining categories.

Mr Whitaker said being considered the most innovative sport is confirmation that the Championship’s new Rock ‘n’ Race format, designed to engage a wider demographic of audiences, is hitting the right note with fans.

“Bringing internationally recognised music acts to our signature events is absolutely helping us introduce V8 Supercar racing to a lot more people,” he said.

“Value-for-money ticketing is encouraging people who have never been to a race track before to come and sample the V8 action before their favourite music act takes to the stage.

“While the Rock ‘n’ Race format is proving extremely popular the bumper-to-bumper V8 Supercar racing the category continues to deliver can’t be underestimated. We’ve found the right recipe with on and off track entertainment and are 100% committed to continually fine tuning this mix to ensure the best possible experience for our fans.”

The V8 Supercars Championship kicks off under lights at the incredible Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi this weekend (Feb 10-12) before returning to the traditional Australian opener, the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide (Mar 17-20), where more than 280,000 will attend the event.

Enjoy the last non-'car of the future' season. COTF rules will be in place by or in the 2012 season which suggests 2011 will be a transition year.

Will be good to see some other makes though.

Hope they have some races on Speed in the US. That's how I got to enjoy some races though the rest not broadcasted I had to watch from a youtuber who was later banned because he posted them all including Bathurst.

The future of this great racing series concerns me, with Ford Oz going down the toilet.

My dream vacation is to go to the Gold Coast and watch the Armor All 600 while renting a sweet Holden for the week. 'Til that happens, I'll keep watching the races on Speed!

Yeah, but you know what? NASCAR is actually listening to the fans. In either 2013 or 2014 there will be a new Car of Tomorrow (I'm calling it COT2,) that will supposedly bring back manufacturer differentiation and sort of take the sport back to its 90s heyday.

Regarding watching these races in the U.S., I just wish Speed would offer them any time around when they actually take place, and do it regularly. I'll be like "Wonder when they're showing Bathurst?" and then I'm flipping through the channels at 3 a.m. a month after the race and there it is.

I may actually start downloading these races and then streaming them to my Vizio in HD...

Good point and the Nationwide COT reflects this. The race cars alot more like street cars, kinda.

Yas V8 400: Whincup Wins Opening Race of 2011

    BigPond Sports
    12 February 2011
    www.v8supercars.com.au

TeamVodafone’s Jamie Whincup has continued his overseas winning streak by scoring an emphatic win in Race 1 of the Yas V8 400.

In his 100th championship event start, Whincup crossed the finish line 13.2 seconds ahead of Alex Davison (Irwin Racing) and Mark Winterbottom (Ford Performance Racing).

The 28 year-old former champion remains the only driver to win an overseas V8 Supercar race since Garth Tander at Hamilton, New Zealand in 2008.

Pole sitter Craig Lowndes stalled on the start line and dropped several spots, allowing Alex Davison to take the temporary race lead.

It was short lived however, with Whincup overtaking the #4 Irwin Racing Falcon before the end of the opening lap.

Winterbottom and Davison diced for second place throughout the race. In the end, a slower second pit stop for Winterbottom proved costly, and handed Davison second spot.

Davison’s runner-up finish is his second podium of his V8 Supercar career.

His Stone Brothers Racing teammates Shane Van Gisbergen (SP Tools Racing), Tim Slade (Lucky 7 Racing) rounded out the top five.

Toll Holden Racing Team’s Garth Tander recovered from his 14th placed starting spot to finish 6th ahead of Lowndes, Fabian Coulthard (Bundaberg Rum Racing), Lee Holdsworth (Fujitsu Racing) and Todd Kelly (Jack Daniel’s Racing).

It was a tough day for reigning champion James Courtney, who was forced to pit to repair the damaged steering on his #1 Commodore after contact with Jason Bargwanna on the opening laps.

Qualifying and Race 2 of the Yas V8 400 will be held at the circuit from 3.15pm local time on Saturday

Reigning V8 Supercar champion James Courtney has won Race 2 of the Yas V8 400 – his first race win with his new Toll Holden Racing Team.

The win is Courtney’s ninth career race win, but he was clearly elated to get his first race win with his new team.

“It is an awesome feeling,” said Courtney.

“After all the hype in the off season all I wanted to do was just get in the car and drive. I can’t thank the guys in the team enough … we stuck together and our strategy was amazing.”

“I’m surprised we made it to the end. I was conserving so much fuel which allowed Brighty to close in on me but then the boys said I had a bit to play with so I just kept pushing!”

    “This is amazing. I’m stoked!”

The last 10 laps was a nail-biting duel between Courtney and Team BOC’s Jason Bright as they diced for track position, while also trying to save fuel to make it to the finish.

Bright finished just 6 tenths behind Courtney, with pole sitter Jamie Whincup in third.

“I thought we had James,” admitted Bright.

“I had to do a fair bit to catch him, and then when I got in front I didn’t have the drive left to keep him at bay.”

The race was marred by an incident on the opening lap when Tony D’Alberto (Wilson Security Racing) made heavy contact with Garth Tander (Toll Holden Racing Team) and Tim Slade (Lucky 7 Racing). All three cars sustained heavy damage and did not finish the race.

David Reynolds (Stratco Racing) scored his best race result, finishing fourth. Michael Caruso (Fujitsu Racing), Jonathon Webb (Mother Energy Racing), Alex Davison (Irwin Racing), Shane van Gisbergen (SP Tools Racing), Greg Murphy (Pepsi Max Crew) and Paul Dumbrell (Bottle-O Racing) rounded out the top ten.

Jamie Whincup leads the championship on 279 points from Alex Davison (234) and Shane van Gisbergen (210).

However Whincup is at the centre of two incidents that under investigation; his contact on Jason Bargwanna and crossing the blend line at pit exit after pit exit opened for start.
