STRONG CHEVROLET PRESENCE EXPECTED FOR AUSTIN 400
    Friday 22nd March, 2013 12:00amAuthor: Stefan Bartholomaeus ©

    Attachment 12620
Chevrolet will become the V8 Supercars Championship’s unofficial fifth manufacturer when the Australian category takes to the Circuit of Americas in Austin, Texas, this May.
The Austin event marks an opportunity for parent company General Motors to leverage the relationship between the sister Holden and Chevrolet brands, which will soon see Holden’s VF Commodore go on sale in the USA as the Chevrolet SS.
The Chevrolet bow-tie was last seen in V8 Supercars at Bahrain in 2008, when Todd Kelly’s Holden Racing Team entry was re-badged as the kingdom’s then local export version of the Commodore VE, the Chevrolet Lumina.
A similar arrangement also saw the Walkinshaw-run Holden of Rick Kelly compete with Buick branding in Shanghai, China, in 2005.
V8 Supercars has already shipped its Holden Commodore VF-bodied Car of the Future prototype to Austin, where it is being used to promote the race. It is dressed with Chevrolet badgework.
A Holden Motor Sport spokesman told Speedcafe.com that a firm decision on its marketing plans with Chevrolet for Texas is yet to be made and that nothing is currently being ruled out.

I would be getting Marcus Ambrose in a car at whatever cost. It shows where he has come from. i don't have any problem with having a mix of Holden and Chevy in the race and if they want do one up as a Vauxhall (maybe one as a Buick with Chinese graphics ) too -show that GM is an international company with many cards in the pack.

Marcos was and is a Ford guy. If anything he should be getting in a ford when they come to Texas.

No offence to any Chevy fans, but they should be badged as Commodores.

I would attend the race if it weren't so far away. Who will drive the Chev badged Holden and will it have left hand drive? Not likely, so don't look for an American driver being in it.

Re: Strong Chevrolet presence expected for Austin 400

I worked at a Chevrolet dealer for years, raced Chevrolet's (real one's) my entire life and was a GM certified tech. Never in my life had I even heard of Holden until I joined this site and I'll be 60 years old next year. I suppose it was easy for GM to get away with badge jobs pre-internet era... Now it looks completely ridiculous to anyone who pays attention. When I saw pictures on here a couple years back of Chevy ElCamino's with 350 sbc's and all under the hood but no Bowtie on the front end my jaw about hit the floor. I couldn't believe what they were getting away with in other parts of the world... You guys had GMC's too but they weren't GMC's. I suppose the joke was on us.

What would be preferable is for GM to keep their companies Real like they were many years ago instead of artificial badgejobs and figments of someone's imagination. Your Holden's would be Real Holden's. Our Chevrolet's would likewise be Real Chevrolet's...

Only then would any true Chevrolet man be satisfied with winning the race.

What the hell are you talking about champ? There has never been an El Camino sold without the bowtie hanging over the dealership door. But there are a metric f%&K load of Holden Utes kicking around with the bowtie on the front clip (for reason that I'll never really understand).

Holden started out badge engineering equines (saddles for horses), then did a little repair of dead bovines (upholstery repair in (coaches) cars), then GM used Holden to provide bodies for their cars in Aus (now there is a dilemma, who do you accuse of badge engineering there? The company providing the chassis or the company providing the body and local assembly so the completed car can be sold with under the name of the chassis???)

Then the great depression killed Holden so GM had to purchase it in order to keep selling cars in Australia - which really meant GM can do what ever the bloody hell it wants to its own cars in order to sell more cars - which you may be very upset to hear, includes badge engineering!!!

Then Holden leveraged (its now parent company) GM's IP to produce entire cars locally (does that constitute badge engineering? The way some on here carry on they would stand by such a nonsense statement).

Then as far as Holden was concerned the global GM cupboard was bare of affordable RWD sedans and Holden had to make it's very own car (less its own engines of course). It tried to make the business case for making its very own car (Coach?) stand up by selling it to the rest of the GM world where upon the internet armchair experts (along with the great recession) pilloried the idea; writing it off as little more than badge engineering.

You see, my general points are these; the more you try to define badge engineering, the more you disappear up your own arse; and, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

By your definition, when was the last "REAL" Chevrolet? You're over 60 and I'd like to submit that it was well before your time. So it is probably time to care a little less about badge engineering and a little more about the sum of all the parts that GM leverage to produce a car that is so good and so well priced that it makes you want to own one.

Re: Strong Chevrolet presence expected for Austin 400

Whether you call it a Holden Commador, or a Chevrolet SS, or even a Vauxhall VXR-8, They are all General Motors, and GM has to use the car that best suits the market it is in. in Austrailia that's Holden and in the USA and almost everywhere else it's Chevrolet. If V8 Supercars series is to be successful in the United States it definately must have Chevrolets running in it!

On a related note....I hope V8 Super Cars series is successfull in the US. From the little I have seen so far, it is much more exciting than NASCAR could ever hope to be in its present form. I looked at my first NASCAR race in more that 15 years for the Daytona 500 a couple weeks ago for two reasons: 1) to see how Danica Pactrick would do and 2) to see the new Nascar Chevy SS. Danica and the Chevy were great, but the race and the broadcast was as boaring as they every were. Can't wait to see the Austin 400! Does anyone know what TV channel it will be broadcast on?

This is true. He really held his nose when we was driving that Toyota for JTG Daughtery his first couple of years in Cup. I can't blame him for doing it, as you do what you have to do to get the ride and feed your family.

Still, that had to be hard for a Ford guy like him.

As relatively "new" NASCAR fans (in our 4th season of following the sport), this was the least exciting Daytona 500 we've seen. All they did was run around in a straight line, with hardly any passing. It was like watching an F1 race.

We really enjoyed the tandom drafting that was in vogue a couple of years ago, but the rule changes and new cars have killed that.

At least the short and intermediate track races are still good.

Might want to check some of the Zeta threads on here to see if ANYONE in USA knows what a Holden is.

as a marketing exercise the V8 supercars IMHO will do the car manufactures little in exposer unless they "Americanafy" there cars as a Ford Falcon and a Holden? Commodore chasing each other around will not "sell on monday" as the product is not available so I would assume the brand on the car has little value unless a Chevy Dealer was to become a "race sponsor" for a car/team
