Olly Gavin: Beating Ford at Le Mans Would be “Marvelous”

“I think the best thing that could possibly happen is if we beat Ford. That would be a marvellous result, although I’m sure Ford want to beat us as well."

Ford is not the team to worry about.. Staying out of crashes through the night is.. Given, Corvettes are now effectively the slowest cars on the grid...

Interesting quote from Olly...... “Who’s the fastest? Most probably Ferrari, then most probably Ford, then us.”

Fords biggest issue will probably be "teething pains" still.

Hopefully they will have worked through them.

Still, I will root for the home team whether it is Ford or Chevy.

I know nothing about racing. Are the cars more or less evenly matched from a technical standpoint? I mean they're not racing Ferraris against Fiestas, obviously, but could a good driver win in any car?

The rules attempt to even the field through ballast weight and air restrictors to the engines. But given that Ford is running in a production car-based category with a carbon tub it'll be tricky to implement.

Not really, teams like Porche do not particularly play fair, there is a lot of politics that go into racing, in Europe, if you are an American car company, its almost like being black in America circa 1933.

Almost always BOP somehow ensures American teams qualify dead last, every single time.

Some in Europe feel the Vettes carry a significant advantage from a weight per horsepower standpoint: the 'oldschool' push rod 5.5L.

I haven't seen sector times for this year, but last year the Corvette was devastating to watch through the Porsche curves but not so much on Mulsanne. Just looking at average lap speeds and Q1 times it seems the case again.

But efff did FoMoCo turn the wick up in quali, 3:51s--and they found about 4-5 mph somewhere...

24 hours is a long time to beat the piss out of a motor vehicle though

The way that vehicles are regulated in racing advantages and disadvantages really come down to BOP more then anything else. The normal min. weight in the LM GTE class is 2,744 pounds and all of the cars in that class can go under that weight if the rules allow them to. They now limit both engine size and horsepower (in general horsepower/weight/tire size are balanced together) which removes the advantage of when they only limited horsepower but nothing to limit torque. That really gave the 7.0L Corvette and 8.0L Viper a big advantage over their competitors, though I am starting to wonder if running turbocharged engines can give one a similar torque advantage (BTW Vipers get waivers to run 8.0L engines).

They're artificially equallised within LM GTE using the "Balance of Performance" factor so that faster cars carry more ballast than slower cars - the Ford GT's have controversially had their ballast penalty reduced after poor performances at Silverstone and Spa.

The Ferrari 458 Italia proved to be very competitive, ever since they started racing with them... Now a couple of 488's - more hp, more torque, more economical - will also be racing.

Yup and then they come out of the gate and destroy at LM24. Doesn't make sense when this class should be pretty close.
