NASCAR's Johnson wins AP male athlete of the year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — There was little recognition outside the racing world when Jimmie Johnson won his first NASCAR championship.

Same with his second, and again with his third.

But four straight championships? That's a different story.

Johnson, the first driver in NASCAR history to win four consecutive titles, earned mainstream recognition Monday when he was honored as the Male Athlete of the Year by members of The Associated Press.

Johnson received 42 votes from editors at U.S. newspapers which are members of the AP. Tennis star Roger Federer (30 votes) and Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt (29) were the only other athletes with totals in the double- digits.

Although Tiger Woods was named Athlete of the Decade, the golfer received only nine votes for Athlete of the Year. He was tied with NBA star Kobe Bryant and slugger Albert Pujols in fourth place. Woods, who was ranked No. 1 in his sport but failed to win one of golf's majors this season, was never a top contender — even before the sex scandal that unraveled his personal life following a Nov. 27 traffic accident.

    Bollocks!!

The top drivers of the auto racing world are supremely fit. They need to be to be able to perform at the 98-100% region for what ever time is needed to complete and win a race. They are a key component of a 'finely tuned package'.

An example, generally F1 race drivers are not much bigger in stature than jockeys who ride race horses. They are subjected to immense forces within the cockpit during a race and if they were not of 'athletic fitness, they would not be able to perform at the highest level.

The days of beer swilling, cigar chomping 'open-face helmeted heroes in "T" shirts' are long gone I'm afraid.

Driving is a tough sport. Its a lot harder then just sitting in a seat, turning a wheel.
I dont agree with this 100%. Farve? The man is 400 years old, and has had one of the best seasons in his carrer

Come to think of it, I don't think Chad got suspended this year, obviously they weren't really trying ....though they did get within a few thousandths of an inch of the line in the sand which was enough for some to think Chad should be suspended for life

Bullcrap. Yes they are. Driving a racing car is serious business that puts a ton of pressure/strain, etc on the body.

My basketball/football-loving friends say the same thing. They also know nothing about cars or motorsports and believe that Toyo/Honda are automatically better than GM/Ford, without any real evidence or research.

Aka this is a LCD thing, ignorance is bliss.

I have to agree with those that say that a driver is not an athlete. What other sport would Jimmie Johnson do well at? Golf? Bowling?

Remember the old ABC series "Superstars"?

If I am not mistaken, Peter Revson won the first year.

    He was a driver.

I also remember that they had to change the rules since some athletes couldn't compete in some tests. Like a boxer that damn near drowned in a swimming race.

Yep, drivers aren't athletes, they also aren't playing games that involve sticks and balls either.

See how long you last going 500 miles. These guys are athletes, no question. People who say they aren't don't have a clue.

By the same note, put Tiger Woods in a race car for a full season, watch him fail.

By your logic, all athletes should excell at all sports. Just not true. Baseball players would not make good football players. Swimmers probably suck at rugby, etc.

500 miles in a car that is 120 degrees inside. You gotta be in great shape to do that. Drivers are athletes. You cannot argue otherwise.

So does Yoga. That means Madonna should have one if body strain is a measure of athletic performance.
