NASCAR: New evidence that Dodge, Chevrolet maybe forced to cut back

Steven Cole on May 11, 2009 2:38:43 PM

Much has been made of the extent to which Chrysler and General Motors' financial problems might impact their NASCAR participation. With Chrysler filing for bankruptcy, and General Motors expected to follow suit within the next 10 days, there is cause for concern.

Dodge executives have said all the right things regarding the company’s participation in NASCAR -- that, despite the bankruptcy, no changes were planned.

Now, there is evidence that it may be beyond their control. According to Automotive News, Chrysler wanted to spend $134 million in advertising over the nine weeks it is expected to be in bankruptcy, but the U.S. Treasury's auto industry task force gave it half that.

“So if General Motors, which is wrestling with the possibility of a Chapter 11 filing itself, is wondering how much influence the task force will have over marketing, the answer is plenty,” the publication said. “Transcripts from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, which is hearing the Chrysler case, showed that the task force at least understands that advertising is a necessary expense -- even if it doesn't think Chrysler needs $134 million for nine weeks of car ads.”

Meaning what? Meaning that, under bankruptcy -- and remaining in business primarily using government money -- the government is not hesitating to tell the manufacturers how much money they can spend on marketing, which is where the lion's share of motorsports funding comes from. Very little -- less than ever -- comes from research and development.

In the government is willing to cut Chrysler's marketing allocation in half -- and that's half of what Chrysler was asking for, not half of what it is used to spending -- then it may be a tough sell to convince the feds that taxpayer dollars should go towards supporting Dodge, which has won just one race this year, Kurt Busch's victory at Atlanta.

As well they should, GM would gain more sales off of a Big Chevy add on the hood of Dale Earnhardts car (even if it were a Toyota) than they do off of their current support. The cars don't look like cars, the sport gives the manufacturer no technology advancement they can use on a street car so its not a good expense for R&D, only advertising. Unfotunately the advertising aspect of it is lost to the manufacturers.

The best advertising would be to use real cars.

Yeah, I fondly (and sadly) recall the days when the looping cars were based on production vehicles.

I see no value in slapping corporate logos on generic plastic shells and chassis.

Let the CTS and Corvette complete, but forget the NASCAR funding.

    How cool that would be.

Agree, especially since the tech under those shells is 40 year old technology with a few modern tweaks here & there. They might as well be racing flatheads, or steam engines, about as relevant to what is in the showrooms.

I know that they can't exacly use real cars, it would be a drastic change from today...but how about using MORE parts from real cars? not just the hood and roof or whatever it is they use now.

Nascar, Like the F1 thread on here also, is now more concerned about how many people are watching..and making the racing 'fair' and 'competitive'...so the days of using real cars, or even more real car parts, are long gone.

There isn't a single part of a Nascar that is from a production car.

Chevrolet has the best NASCAR program. Cutbacks in a big way would hurt it's best marketing machine and racing program. I hope never to see Toyota win Sprint Cups!

Wonder where that picture is from? Dirt track. Some brave fans standing 10 feet off the track. Ah, those were the days.

Re: NASCAR: New evidence that Dodge, Chevrolet maybe forced to cut back

I completely agree. The triumphs of the Corvette, CTS-V and, hell, even the Cobalt SS, in LeMans and in other racing circuits has generated far more positive press for actual production cars than anything that has been garnered from NASCAR in 20 years.

It's time to drop this money suck like there is no tomorrow and take $250-$500 million GM spends on NASCAR each year and invest it back into the product.

Before people get all over me, I know the CTS and Cobalt haven't raced in LeMans (but the Corvette has), but they have been very successful in their own circuits. I was just using it as a poorly worded example.
