Jeff Gordon Wants Back in a Race Car

Retired NASCAR great Gordon has Le Mans in mind
    Reuters
    By: Lewis Franck

Jeff Gordon, one of the greatest NASCAR drivers of all-time, may be recently retired but has not given up on the idea of one day competing in the Le Mans 24 Hours sportscar race.

Last year marked the final full-time season on the premier stock car circuit for the three-time Daytona 500 champion but the 44-year-old Gordon is still open to the idea of getting back behind the wheel of a race car.

"I've always said that if the right opportunity came along I would like to," Gordon, who will be a member of Fox's broadcast team for Sunday's Daytona 500, told Reuters. "When it comes to competing and racing I don't take it for granted of what it takes to be competitive."

Now wouldn't it be lovely to see him running in a C7R

JG was literally the first race car driver I knew by name, he was my absolute favorite as a kid, it was strange to see him up in the booth during the 500 yesterday...

He has ALWAYS wanted to do Le Mans but the NASCAR schedule has kept him from doing it.

Cadillac could take advantage and develop an LMP1 with a guy like him in mind..

Or they could save the money that they'd waste there and give us an ATS that doesn't have an IP from a Cobalt.

Racing comes with brand prestige. I was at a Jaguar Dealership and virtually 3 people looking at the new Jaquar F type brought up the corvette, and the sales people at Jaguar would try to talk down the corvette, but buyers would come back with 'I test drove it' or Its won le man's and the C7 has similar build quality,.. etc, I was bemused.. one sales person was clever and sold the F-type as a GT not a sports car like Corvette...

Believe you me, Taking down Audi, Porsche and the likes at Le Man's would not be easy, but GM has the engineering muslce to do it, and now the money, and it would pay off for Cadillac.. big time.

But those brands, including Corvette, have the cachet that Cadillac doesn't have. I would advise that Caddy get their image together before they think about going racing again, there are too many holes in their lineup and too many cut corners in their current offerings. Cadillac should be at a point where NO ONE could compare ANY Caddy to ANY Lincoln, but yet here we are.

Racing is how Corvette made its image, Racing is a way of making one's image.. I tell you, this is a good use of marketing dollars.

The only thing that kept Jeff Gordon out of a C7R was his sponsors. Now that is no longer an issue, he is perfect for either a GT2 C7R or even a newly legal C7 GT3-R later this year. Corvette has the worldwide cache...NOT Cadillac. After 8 Lemans GT championships and the PRESENT GT Lemans Champion Corvette Racing would be very proud to have another American driver aboard

it would be difficult. dale jr was horrible in the c7 at Daytona. his father was off the chain amazing. despite having never driven in the rain he was one of the fastest cars on the track.

Re: Jeff Gordon Wants Back in a Race Car

Jeff Gordon was a very good stock car driver winning on super-speedways, cookie-cutter mile and a halfs, short tracks and road courses. He certainly would be ranked top 5 on those road courses. I'm not sure how the skill transfer from those heavy ungainly NASCAR racers to sports cars would work out but I would like to see him being given a chance in a C7R. It won't happen this year as the C7R teams are already set.
