BREAKING: Formula One coming to Austin, Texas in 2012

After a three-year hiatus, Formula One is coming back to the states in 2012 and the city that's been chosen to host the World Cup of Motorsports? Austin, Texas. Yes, Austin.

According to the release from F1, the race will be held in the city from 2012 to 2021, and since Austin doesn't have a race track, a facility will be purpose-built to host the events. Get all the details in the press release after the jump.

I thought the Belle Isle in Detroit was a pretty sweet venue for the Grand Prix. Not that I'm saying Austin isn't one of the greatest cities in the country, I'm just sayin'.....

I attended a CART race in Vancouver back in 2000 (maybe 2001.) It was an awesome event. I'm sure an F1 event would be an awesome experience as well.

I was in Europe a few years ago in the spring and we were planning a short side trip. I had recommended and wanted to go to Monaco for the race but we missed it by three weeks.
Research is what I am doing when I don't know what I am doing.

Wonder if Mgescuro will be upset that they didn't choose San Francisco?

Amen. Could have even run it on the Rolex 24 circuit.

Nope. Daytona has stated before that they DO NOT want to upgrade their paddock and spend the money to have F1 race at their track.

With the track going to be out in the country more than likely, the hill country will be GREAT location. The hills will make it a beautiful track.

    F1 & Austin, what a strange combination...

    I'll be there though.

I could be mistaken, but I thought they were already doing minor upgrades to the paddock area starting with the repaving project this summer? I know it was part of the original plan, but I think it may have gotten cut back.

Ovals aren't good enough for F1.

Do you see ONE oval on the F1 circuit?

Thats not near enough for F1. They demand a very technical paddock along with HUGE spaces for the cars and so on.

I also think that F1 would NOT want to run on the same track that is known around the world as the super bowl of NASCAR. Just not something I see them wanting to be mentioned in the same sentence with.
