Formula DRIFT Prepares for Sixth Professional Championship Season
    by John Pangilinan

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Formula DRIFT prepares to begin the sixth professional championship season. Reserved tickets will be available online starting Thursday, February 26 for Round 1: Streets of Long Beach on April 10 and 11. The season opener will feature the world debut of new drift cars, new and returning drivers, and lots more.

'Formula DRIFT is excited to enter its sixth season of competition and we have a lot of new things in store for the fans,' said Jim Liaw, co-founder and president of Formula DRIFT. 'We are proud to present the world debut of new competition vehicles at Long Beach including the 2010 Ford Mustang driven by Vaughn Gittin, Jr., the 2010 Dodge Challenger driven by 2-time Formula DRIFT champion, Samuel Hubinette, and the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe driven by World Champion and Formula DRIFT champion, Rhys Millen. In these tough economic times it is great to see that auto manufacturers have chosen Formula DRIFT as one of their main motorsports platforms.'

Round 1: Streets of Long Beach tickets will be available beginning February 26 via the Formula DRIFT website.

The action begins on April 10th in Long Beach, California and will be held on a section of the famous Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach street course. New cars and drivers will be entering the Series and will make for another exciting season. The addition of Top 32 tandem battle will be sure to challenge the drivers and add to the action. Current back-to-back Formula DRIFT Champion, Tanner Foust and World Champion Rhys Millen make their return on different vehicle platforms and will battle against the best drifters for the Formula DRIFT championship.

Crazy. But I guess the Solstice cant compete with the Genesis, with the Genesis have a better weight to power ratio. I still going to attend, with GM cars or the lack of it.

And the 2010 Camaro didn't manage to get in on this why, again?

    That's rather disappointing.

I don't think power has anything to do with it. With a GM Performance parts addition you can have 290hp and even more torque. Think of what the engine would put out if it weren't burdened by smog regulations and 91 octane fuel. I'd bet that 95% of this was about sponsorships and about $$$.

wow that is an interesting change, though that said, I am not really all that surprised, maybe this is another way GM is looking to save a bit. Hyundai is really pushing the Genesis coupe and sedan and this can only help. Imagine the Camaro not being in it being from either Chev's commitment to Nascar and or cause it is not fully into production yet, where as the 2010 Mustang is really mostly a cosmetic change so not so hard to get it set up for it

I think he was using the Pontiac GTO. Unfortunately, Hyundai is stealing too many sales from GM which gives Hyundai more money for marketing such as this. The Camaro doesn't need to do this type of motorsport. It obviously didn't do anything for GTO sales.

Simple: Hyundai's pockets are full and Pontiac/GMs aren't.
Rhys can't support his operation on his own.
It's a shame because rhys won a championship and often finished one-two with teammate Daijiro Yoshihara using the older gto.

Not to be pessimistic, but unless your idea of chevy is based of a line of chinese made vehicles, the chevrolet as you and I know, will be a relic of the past including the possible stillborn neo-camaro. GMs problems are deeper then just pontiac.

I could have sworn this had already been announced some time ago, but given the number of Hyundi ads we saw during the Oscars I can't say I am shocked, seems like Hyundi either has a lot of money to spend or is just willing to spend more to grow in bad times even it means a slight loss.
Talk is cheap, sometimes it is on sale.

how in the world do you figure that?? the Solstice is still lighter than the Genesis coupe and the ethonal pwrd Ecotec pushes 500hp anyway. what you say make no sense.

but to be honest, i knew this was going to happen, Hyundai was riding Millen real hard to develope the car and also do the tuner concept. he even drove the car in the superbowl comercial. lets face it; as a sponser Pontiac is a dead horse anyway. if they were still alive and kicking, we would be seeing a G8 sport truck drift car or a G8 GT or Solstice GXP coupe.

hmmmm, to say that drifting is lame as a supposed car enthusiest makes one extremely suspect in my book. thats like saying Rally racing is lame, or drag racing is pointless...
