    That wasn't very safe.

Seriously, it wasn't. Did you see how the driver's door popped open when it was hit? That's not good news.

The BMW was flying when he hit the safety car................

The BMW hit the safety car with enough force to send the Chevy airborn and they were going in the same direction.

Those videos they released last week of the Cruze crash tests looked very impressive to me - major offset impacts didn't seem to budge the crucial windshield pillar dimensions. And door sure as heck stayed good and shut.

Amazing how little damage was done to the Cruze. Good sign I think.

Why was it necessary to lift the car off the track? Don't they have tow trucks in that country? Besides it didn't look like there was enough damage to stop the Cruze from driving under its own power.

Right, it's a new safety feature. And if you don't wear your seatbelt, the car will automatically eject you out of harms way.

I wonder what the hell that safety car driver was thinking? He pulled all the way out across the track like he was intentionally trying to get in front of that BMW.

He was. In many car series its illegal to pass the pace/safety car unless they are directed around by race officials.

The yellow flags were waving when the video STARTED and the accident happened at :08.

Really hard to place blame there. The safety car driver could of pulled out closer to the wall and the BMW driver could of slowed the hell down under a yellow flag.

Re: Chevy Safety Car smashed at WTCC

Certainly enough crashes on that first lap. The safety car driver made the mistake of not gradually moving on to the track. The lead car's crew chief should have told him about the yellow flag. Obviously the driver should have been paying attention to what was going on in front of him. What was he doing texting? That door opening definitely isn't a welcome site, but at the angle the lead car slammed into it, I wonder what the chances are that would happen again. The reason the front fascia peeled off of the bimmer so easily is because that's how race cars are designed, it's just a skin.

That is a good assessment of the situation for the yellow flags. I believe this was not just a localized yellow flag, but I wasn't there so I can,t judge.

In most series, when the safety car is deployed, the teams are made aware and they communicate with their drivers.

As for the Cruze door and crash worthiness, please keep in mind that this is not like in the testing the manufacturers, insurers or any authority do. This was a race car coming in at race speed. The video mentions 185 kmh, I take this with a grain of salt as the driver would have had time to brake, but still he must have been over 120-130 kmh. Unless you drive a tank, you vehicule will absorb and deflect the energy of the impact, in a way, or another.

    Glad everyone is safe.
